Akhilesh Yadav is the president of the Samajwadi Party. He was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. He is the son of SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav.
His entry into politics came with a victory from the Lok Sabha constituency of Kannauj in a by-election in 2000. He won the elections from the same constituency in the 2004 and 209 Lok Sabha elections.
Currently, he is a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) in Uttar Pradesh. In March 2012, he was appointed as the leader of the Samajwadi Legislative Party in Uttar Pradesh. At the age of 38, he became the youngest chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
After Akhilesh became CM, the family divided into two feuding groups, one siding with him and the other with party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. He had the support of his father's cousin, Ram Gopal Yadav, while his father was supported by his brother Shivpal Yadav.
After the Samajwadi Party’s loss in the 2017 UP Assembly elections, he parted ways with the Congress. Since then, he has forged an alliance with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in several by-polls. For the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he and Mayawati have allied to regain lost electoral grounds in the state. What will be interesting to watch is how he responds if neither BJP nor Congress gets enough numbers to form a government. He will contest from the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat.
