Anand Sharma was the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry in the second Manmohan Singh government from 2009 to 2014. Currently, he is the Deputy leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. He was a Minister of State with the portfolio of External Affairs from 2006 to 2009. He is currently a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh.
Sharma's entry into politics was as a leader of the student wing of the Congress - the National Students Union of India. Subsequently, he became the President of the Indian Youth Congress. He was first elected to Rajya Sabha in 1984 from Himachal Pradesh at the age of 31. He rose up the ranks of the Congress to become a spokesperson the party.
Sharma has been a staunch critic of the Narendra Modi government. Recently, he said that the ruling dispensation would be punished in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections for their lies, He said the Modi government was in the "departure lounge" and it would no longer be able to "threaten and mislead" people.
