Anupriya Patel is the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Narendra Modi government at the Centre since 2016. She is a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, representing the Mirzapur constituency. Patel is the daughter of Apna Dal founder Sone Lal Patel. Sonelal Patel had been a close associate of Dalit leader Kanshi Ram and was one of the founders of the Bahujan Samaj Party. Apna Dal counts the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) in the Varanasi region as a major vote bank.
Anupriya became the President of a faction of the Apna Dal {Apna Dal (Sonelal)} in 2009 after the party split into two on the death of her father. She won the Assembly election in 2012 from the Rohaniya constituency in Uttar Pradesh. She made headlines last year when she said her party wants to break away from the NDA (National Democratic Alliance). Patel feels that the BJP did not give due respect to its smaller allies. She met Congress leaders like Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotoiraditya Scindia, leading to speculations about the possibility of a Mahagathbandhan in the state.
However, Apna Dal (S) hasn't parted ways with the NDA coalition yet. Anupriya Patel's faction recently approached the Election Commission (EC) with the complaint that the Krishna Patel faction was using the original party's name to campaign for the Lok Sabha Elections 2019, thereby violating the Model Code of Conduct. The Krishna faction -- which is led by Anupriya's mother -- has tied up with the Congress for the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
