A senior Congress politician, 67-year-old Ashok Gehlot is the current chief minister of Rajasthan. This is Gehlot’s third term as the CM of the state. Born in 1951 to a famous magician father, Gehlot joined the Indian National Congress in the 1970s.
He became a member of the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1980 from Jodhpur and a Union minister of state in 1982 in the Indira Gandhi government. A five-time member of the Lok Sabha, he first became the chief minister of Rajasthan in 1998, when the BJP lost the election. He returned as CM in 2008 once again.
In 2013, the Congress party was reduced to just 21 MLAs in the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly. After the Congress’ poor performance in 2014, Gehlot played a larger role in national politics. As general secretary in charge of Gujarat, Gehlot ensured that the Congress performed well in the state Assembly polls in 2017. Contrary to expectations, the party increased its tally in the elections. In 2018, the Congress won a close victory in the state of Rajasthan and Gehlot once again became the chief minister, being preferred by the party high command to younger leader Sachin Pilot for the post.
Gehlot is known as an astute politician famous for his humble manners and Gandhian lifestyle. He belongs to the Mali caste and has been able to bring different caste groups in the state together, thereby ensuring his importance in the party.
He represents the Sardarpura seat in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.
