Admission procedures and entry tests vary widely across states and universities/institutes in India. Usually, admission to a university in a state is based on the performance of candidates in Higher Secondary examinations. For example, CBSE 12th exam, ISC 12th exam or Maharashtra HSC exam. Some states also have special entrance examinations for entry into engineering programmes, for example, the Common Entrance Test in Karnataka, or the KTET in Kerala.
Admission to Central Universities, IITs, and NITs is based on a combination of performance in nationwide exams such as the JEE-MAINS and the HSC exams.
Admission to the National Law Universities is based on a national level CLAT exam. Among other important exams are CSIR-UGC NET, UGC NET, CAT, MAT, GATE, GPAT, NEET, etc. In order to get government jobs, too, candidates have to take written exams or sit in face-to-face interviews or both.
