Dr Harsh Vardhan has held the position of Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences in both first and second terms of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya janata Party government at the Centre. A senior BJP leader, Vardhan had previously been at the helm of various ministries in the Delhi government.
Vardhan contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Chandni Chowk constituency in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He defeated his nearest rival, Jai Prakash Agarwal of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 228145 votes. While Vardhan received 52.94 per cent of the votes cast in the constituency, Agarwal polled 29.67 per cent votes.
Earlier, he had been trusted as the chief ministerial candidate by the BJP during the 2013 Delhi Assembly polls. A surgeon by profession, Vardhan got elected to the Delhi Assembly from the Krishna Nagar constituency in east Delhi in 1993. He was elected to the Delhi Assembly for four more successive terms and to the Lok Sabha in 2014 from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi, where he defeated sitting MP and former Law Minister Kapil Sibal.
He was sworn in as the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare on 26 May 2014. His portfolio was later changed to Science and Technology during the expansion of Narendra Modi government's Cabinet.
Vardhan is credited with rebuilding the operations in Delhi after the party's defeat in 2003 elections.
