Harsimrat Kaur Badal has been the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries in both first and second terms of the Narendra Modi government. She is married to Sukhbir Singh Badal, son of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the founder of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). She is a Member of Parliament from the Lok Sabha constituency of Bathinda in Punjab.
In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, she defeated Amrinder Singh Raja Warring of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 21772 votes. Badal polled 41.04% of the votes cast in this constituency, against Warrier's 39.23 per cent.
Harsimrat had entered electoral politics with the 2009 Lok Sabha election and was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Bhatinda constituency after defeating Indian National Congress candidate Raninder Singh by 120,960 votes. She went on to win a second consecutive term from the same constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Harsimrat is currently the only member of the Badal family in the Lok Sabha. The SAD faced a huge defeat in the Punjab Assembly elections in 2017, winning only 15 seats, against the 77 that Congress pocketed. A win for Harsimrat in Lok Sabha elections 2019 is seen as a morale booster for SAD.
