Former minister, Jairam Ramesh is a Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha representing the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Born in 1954, Ramesh completed his graduation from IIT-Bombay and then did a Masters in Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University in USA. He then studied economics at MIT, USA. He returned to India in late 1970s and then served the government in different advisory capacities.
After serving as advisor to Finance Minister, P Chidambaram between 1996 and 1998, he joined the Congress party formally. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2004. Ramesh served as minister in three different ministries during the second tenure of Manmohan Singh government. He served as Minister of Environment and Forests and Minister of Rural Development in different periods.
Seen as an expert backroom manager of the Congress party, Ramesh is also credited with coining the party’s 2004 slogan, Congress ka haath, aam aadmi ke saath
