Murli Manohar Joshi is a veteran politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). At present, he represents the Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency in the Lower house of Parliament. During the Emergency period in India, Joshi was in jail from 26 June 1975 until the Lok Sabha elections in 1977. He is one of the founding members of the party.
A three-term MP from Allahabad before he was defeated in the Lok Sabha elections of May 2004, Joshi won election to the 15th Lok Sabha from Varanasi as a BJP candidate. He was a sitting MP from Varanasi, a seat he vacated for Narendra Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. He later contested from Kanpur and won from the constituency by a margin of 223,000 votes. That year, Modi-led BJP put Murli Manohar Joshi and L K Advani in the ‘Margdarshak Mandal’, after which, Joshi's role as a politician was greatly diminished.
While Lal Krishna Advani, the architect of the BJP's mass-party avatar, has now been firmly placed on the shelf, a similar technique has been adopted with Joshi, too. He has not been given a ticket for contesting Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
