Recently designated the Indian National Congress’ general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, Priyanka Gandhi brings with her a political legacy as the great grand-daughter of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, grand-daughter of former PM Indira Gandhi, and daughter of former PM Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi. She is also the younger sister of the party’s present national president, Rahul Gandhi.
As for her own journey, she made her political foray during the 1999 Lok Sabha elections campaigning for her mother Sonia Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli seat. She also managed the campaign for her brother Rahul Gandhi in 2004 in the Amethi seat.
Among the constituencies placed under Priyanka Gandhi's charge for the Lok Sabha elections 2019 are Lucknow, Amethi, Rae Bareli, Sultanpur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Phulpur, Allahabad, Barabanki and Kushinagar.
It remains to be seen whether she would contest the Lok Sabha polls or be content with the status of AICC general-secretary-cum-star-campaigner.
In total, Priyanka Gandhi is managing the affairs for the Congress in the 41 Lok Sabha constituencies of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The party is hoping her to be the 'game changer' in the state, where erstwhile arch-rivals Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have announced a tie-up. Also, this is the region where BJP star campaigners Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath have a strong foothold.
