Randeep Singh Surjewala is a Congress politician from Haryana. He is the son of erstwhile Congress leader and Union Minister Shamsher Singh Surjewala. Currently, he represents Kaithal constituency in the Haryana Assembly. He also heads the media and communication wing of the Congress party.
Surjewala had his first brush with politics while attending college at Panjab University. Later, he went to become a corporate lawyer. Randeep contested five elections to the Haryana Legislative Assembly i.e. 1993-bye-election, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2014. In first four elections, he was fielded against former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala. He defeated Chautala in 1996 and again in 2005. He has held several Cabinet portfolios such as Water Supply and Sanitation, Parliamentary Affairs, Electronics and Information Technology, Science and Technology in the Haryana government at different junctures.
Surjewala is frequently seen beside Rahul Gandhi at Congress press conferences. Being the head of communication and media for the Congress, his role in the upcoming elections is crucial. However, more importantly, it will be interesting to see if he gets a Lok Sabha ticket in Haryana as lost bye-polls in Jind in January this year by a massive margin. In the lead up to the election in Jind, he had appealed to the constituency to look at it as a referendum on Bharatiya Janata Party's rule in the state.
