Shimron Hetmyer is a Guyanese cricketer who plays for Windies cricket team. A left-handed batsman, he has represented Windies in the U-19 World Cup twice. Cricket West Indies made him the captain of the 2016 U-19 World Cup and he successfully took his team to glory, defeating India in the final match to become the U-19 champions. In August 2018, he became the youngest batsman to score a hundred in the Caribbean Premier League when he made 100 for Guyana Amazon Warriors against the Jamaica Tallawahs.
Hetmyer made his One Day International debut against New Zealand at Cobham Oval (New) in Whangarei on December 20, 2017. In 20 ODI matches played so far, he has scored 758 runs at an average of 37.9 and a strike of 106.91. In the ODI series against India in 2018, he started his innings at a brisk pace and hit some mighty sixes before falling and failing to convert the fifty into a big innings. On 6 March 2018, in the Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, he scored his first ODI century, batting against the United Arab Emirates at the Old Hararians ground in Harare. The West Indies won the game by 60 runs and Hetmyer was named the man of the match.
In the IPL players auction 2019, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him for a whopping Rs 4.2 crore, hoping his big-hitting skills might help RCB sort out their middle-order woes. However, on his debut against Chennai Super Kings in the first match of IPL 2019 on March 23, 2019, he was dismissed for a duck on the very second ball he faced. In the 5 IPL matches he has played so far, he has scored 90 runs with an average of 18.00 and strike rate of 123.28.
Hetmyer’s T20 International career began against New Zealand at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on January 1, 2018, but he didn’t get a chance to bat then as the match was abandoned due to heavy rains. In the eight T20 matches played so far, he has scored 77 runs at an average of 12.83.
In April 2017, he was named in the Windies Test squad for a series against Pakistan. He made his Test debut for the Windies against Pakistan on 21 April 2017. His stats in Test cricket are below par as he scored only 754 in 13 matches at an average of 30.16.
