Subramanian Swamy is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He was one of the founding members of the Janata Party. He was the party's president since its inception in 1990 till 2013, when it merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 
Swamy completed his Masters in Mathematics from the University of Delhi and went on to do PhD in Economics from Harvard University under Nobel Laureate Simon Kuznets. He entered politics with his involvement in the Sarvodaya movement. Later he became a staunch opponent of Indira Gandhi and went underground during the Emergency.  
He was elected to the Lok Sabha five times between 1974 and 1999. In 1990 -1991, Swamy served as a member of the Planning Commission and also as Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Law. He was instrumental in exposing the colossal 2G Scam. He was also dragged former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to court over a scam that eventually led to her conviction. 
Swamy frequently hogs the limelight frequently for his controversial comments. After the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, he said that Muslims should be stripped of voting rights. 
He had also alleged that former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan was a foreign agent and didn't make decisions in India's best interest.
