Bihar election result 2020 Highlights: Defying the exit polls and surmounting anti-incumbency, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), is back in power in Bihar with a slender majority. The ruling coalition won 125 seats in the 243-member state Assembly. The Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan clinched 110. The mandate paves the way for a fourth successive term in office for Kumar. Its defeat notwithstanding, the RJD emerged as the single-largest party with 75 seats. The BJP finished second with a tally of 74 seats.

Lok Janshakti Party President Chirag Paswan described the Bihar poll results as a "victory" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the people had shown their trust in him. Paswan's party managed to win just one seat.

The performance of the Congress, which contested as part of the Mahagathbandhan, was uninspiring. It managed to win just 19 seats, about 25 per cent of the seats allotted to it in the alliance.

From the Opposition, the biggest gainer was the CPI-ML, which clinched 12 seats, followed by the CPI and CPI-M (two each). While the CPI-ML had three seats in the outgoing Assembly, the other two Left parties had no presence in the House..

BJP destroyed legacy of Ram Vilas Paswan, reduced stature of Nitish Kumar by its 'kootneeti': Digvijaya Singh

Senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of destroying the legacy of late Ram Vilas Paswan and reducing the stature of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by its "kootneeti" (strategy) in Bihar.

After losing the Madhya Pradesh by-polls and Bihar Assembly elections 2020, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh in a series of tweets (roughly translated from Hindi) said, "BJP has reduced Nitish's stature by its strategy and ended the legacy of Ram Vilas Paswan ji."

Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power with an absolute majority in Bihar Assembly election with 125 on Wednesday. However, Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which fielded 137 candidates, managed to secure only one seat.

Singh has also advised Nitish Kumar to leave Bihar and enter national politics.

"Nitish ji, Bihar has become small for you. You should join national politics. Do not let the Union's policy of 'divide and rule'. Help all socialists believe in the secular ideology. Do consider," the Rajya Sabha MP added.

Bihar election result 2020 LIVE update: Friendship stands Nitish Kumar in good stead, catapults him to office 4th term in row

For close to 15 years, he ruled politically volatile Bihar with a paradoxical cocktail of stubborn ideology and pragmatic resilience, making friends with foes and foes with friends at will.

Nitish Kumar's unusual knack for spotting friends has ensured a fourth straight term for him in office despite the drastic slump in his electoral fortune that relegated his JD (U) to the third position in the state assembly with just 43 seats, down from 71 it had won in 2015.

The most atypical of politicians owing their rise to post-Mandal politics, Nitish Kumar stood out for his ability to address the governance deficit, unlike a majority of the breed reared in the socialist stable, but was often accused of pursuing politics of opportunism.

Call it political opportunism or sagacity, his moves, in effect, prevented the Hindutva forces from holding sway over Bihar, where a section of the BJP feels mortified over not having its own chief minister till date despite enjoying a near hegemonic status nationally.

Known for weighing his options carefully before making any move, Kumar, upon a closer look, comes across as a risk taker who has not shied away from going against the tide.

An engineer by training who had taken an active part in the JP movement, Kumar spurned a job offer from the state electricity department and decided to take the political gamble, an oddity among educated youth in Bihar for whom the lure of "sarkaari naukri" remains undiminished.

Bihar election result 2020 LIVE update: After Bihar poll boost, AIMIM plans to contest in UP, West Bengal

Buoyed by the results of Bihar assembly elections, the AIMIM which bagged five seats is now looking to spread its wings to states such as Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday night, MIM's president Asaduddin Owaisi said the party will fight for justice inthe northern state's Seemanchal region.

Reacting to allegations that his party was dividing anti-BJP votes, Owaisi said he was running a political party that has a right to contest on its own.

"You mean we should not fight elections. You (Congress) went and sat in Shiv Sena's lap (in Maharashtra). If anyone asks why did you fight the elections... I will fight in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and will fight every election in the country...

DoI need to ask anyone's permission to fight the polls," he said when asked whether the party would contest in any other state.

He however, did not clarify whether the party would contest on its own or in alliance with other parties.

"AIMIM will fight in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Time only will tell with whom we will ally," Owaisi added.

If Nitish becomes Bihar CM, credit goes to Shiv Sena: Saamana

ising RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for giving a "spirited fight" in the Bihar Assembly polls, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday needled the BJP saying that if Nitish Kumar retains the post of chief minister despite the JD(U) winning fewer seats, the credit should go to the Sena.

It said that the BJP had promised that Nitish Kumar would be the next chief minister of Bihar even if his party bags less number of seats.

The BJP had given a similar promise to the Sena during the 2019 Maharashra Assembly polls, but as that word was not kept, it led to a political drama in the state, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said that JD(U) could not win even win 50 seats in the Bihar elections, while the BJP bagged 70 seats.

"BJP leader Amit Shah had announced that Nitish Kumar would become the chief minister even if his party gets less number of seats. But a similar assurance was given to the Shiv Sena during the 2019 Assembly polls in Maharashtra, which was not honoured and the state witnessed a political 'Mahabharat'," it said.

"If Nitish Kumar becomes the chief minister despite winning less number seats, its credit should go to the Shiv Sena," it added.

Tejashwi Yadav: political novice who gave veterans a run for their money

An avid cricketer whose career never really took off, a political greenhorn who got power on a silver platter but failed to keep it, a scion of Bihar's most powerful family who could not get past the 9th grade.

That was Tejashwi Yadav until the 2020 assembly polls marked the coming of age of a politician who valiantly went down fighting an army of battle-hardened veterans.

He may have failed to learn the textbook lessons at DPS, R K Puram, in the national capital but showed an uncanny knack of reading the mind of voters, like his more famous father, as he led the opposition Grand Alliance to an impressive performance in the polls winning 110 seats in the 243-member assembly.

He also powered the RJD to the status of the single largest party in the House with 75 seats.

Analysts feel Tejashwi's poll promise of sanctioning "10 lakh government jobs at my first cabinet meeting" was a masterstroke which had the young voter swooning in a state reeling from widespread joblessness sparked by COVID-induced lockdown when the return of countless migrants home brought the state's largely agrarian economy under further stress.

The promise was good but not good enough to bring down the NDA government.

"The way Nitish Kumar ji has run the government in past years, seeing that people have given him another chance in Bihar. BJP has triumphed in various states," Aruna said.

'Big parties treated me like an untouchable': Owaisi after AIMIM's 5-seat win in Bihar elections

Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen, which was given tags like 'vote cutter' and spoiler in the Bihar assembly polls, won five Muslim-dominated seats on Tuesday and said its critics have got a befitting reply from the people.

After the election results, Owaisi said one learns from their mistakes in politics. In an interview with NDTV, Owaisi said, "our Bihar chief personally met with each and every leader of political parties. No one was ready to touch us. Big parties treated me like an untouchable. Our party president met every important Muslim leader as well," he said, adding that despite all the effort, nothing worked.

RJD-Congress allegations: EC says not under anyone's pressure

Bihar election results LIVE update: Nitish Kumar makes it in tough Bihar election but with depleted JD-U strength

It was a tough assembly election for Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as he faced multiple challenges in his bid for the fourth successive term in office. The challenge posed by Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Mahagathbandhan gained momentum as the campaign progressed and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Chirag Paswan also gunned for him.

The performance of Janata Dal-United has down compared its performance in the 2015 elections and the ruling party could not win even half of the number of seats it contested in this election. But the seats it won were enough to give a cushion to the strong performance by BJP to take the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) past the majority mark in the 243-member House.

Kumar's party could only win 43 seats out of the 115 seats it contested whereas BJP, which fielded 110 candidates registered victory in 74 constituencies.

Bihar election result 2020 LIVE updates: BJP emerges as senior partner in Bihar NDA, leaves JD(U) far behind

The BJP appeared set to leave its ally JD(U) far behind in the seat tally in the Bihar assembly elections, emerging as the senior partner in the alliance for the first time in about two decades.

The saffron party was leading or had won in 73 seats in the 243-member assembly, while the corresponding figure for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led party was merely 41, according to the Election Commission figures at 7.50 pm.

The development can change the power dynamics within the ruling alliance, even if it manages to retain power in the state and Kumar continues to be chief minister.

The EC trends showed that the contest between the NDA and the RJD-led grand alliance was turning out to be a nail-biter with the two contestants to the power leading in 122 and 113 seats respectively, as per the latest trends.

Political watchers believe that the BJP after playing the second fiddle in the alliance since it came to power in 2005 will now be more assertive in pushing its agenda.

If BJP lets Nitish Kumar become Bihar CM, thank Shiv Sena, says Sanjay Raut

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday said JD-U leader Nitish Kumar should thank it if he retains the post of Bihar chief minister despite his party winning less seats in the Assembly polls than ally BJP as the latest trends indicate.

Referring to last year's dramatic turn of events in Maharashtra, which saw the Shiv Sena severing ties with the BJP and forming government with ideological rivals NCP and the Congress, Sena MP Sanjay Raut said his party had shown what happens "when word is not kept" by an alliance partner.

"I heard BJP leaders saying in unison (on TV) that only Nitish babu will be the chief minister. Nitish babu should thank Shiv Sena for that. Not keeping promises will not happen in Bihar because the Shiv Sena has shown in Maharashtra what can happen if word is not kept," Raut said.

"Hence, if Nitish Kumar becomes Bihar chief minister, despite winning less number of seats (as compared to the BJP), he should thank the Shiv Sena for it," the Rajya Sabha MP said.

Hope, disappointment as early trends show NDA ahead of Grand Alliance in Bihar

With the Bihar poll trends showing the ruling NDA marching ahead of the RJD-led Grand Alliance, the mood was buoyant among BJP and JD(U) workers, but RJD and Congress activists looked disappointed, even though hoping for things to change in their favour.

At the BJP office at Beer Chand Patel Path, where there was not much activity for the past three days after exit polls projected a majority for the Grand Alliance, several leaders and party workers have started coming in with beaming faces.

In the RJD camp, which was on cloud nine till Monday with almost all exit polls indicating the party-helmed coalition coming to power in the state and its leader Tejashwi Yadav becoming chief minister, the initial euphoria appears to be dipping.

A crowd of Tejashwi supporters that had gathered outside the 10 Circular Road residence of former chief minister Rabri Devi expecting a victory is thinning now.

But some ardent supporters, carrying photographs of Tejashwi in Delhi Daredevils jersey from his IPL days and also him taking oath as CM, stay put in the hope that things will change for better with the progress of counting.

He further criticised the role of Chirag Paswan's Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) by saying, "LJP has played a negative role, it has no existence in Bihar's politics now."
