By-election result 2020 LIVE: Diwali seems to have arrived a few days early for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today. Even as counting of votes is underway in Assembly by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and in 8 other states, the saffron party has managed to pull a magnificent lead in a majority of seats across the states. In Madhya Pradesh bypolls, the ruling party is leading in 20 of the 28 Assembly constituencies for which by-elections were held, while the Congress is ahead in seven seats. In Gujarat, Karnataka and Telangana, BJP has won in all the eight, two and one seats, respectively. In Manipur, BJP candidate Oinam Lukhoi Singh won the by-election to the Wangoi seat, while saffron party candidates were leading from two other constituencies and an Independent from one.
The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress retained both Dumka and Bermo Assembly seats for which bypolls were held. JMM candidate Basant Soren won the Dumka seat, defeating BJP candidate and former Minister Louis Marandi by over 6,000 votes. Basant Soren secured 79,964 votes and Louis Marandi got 73,524 votes.
The Congress won in Haryana's Baroda Assembly bypoll, which was necessitated after the demise of the sitting Congress MLA.

BJP wins 16 seats so far in MP, govt on firm wicket
The BJP won 16 seats till Tuesday night out of the 28 assembly constituencies where bypolls were held in Madhya Pradesh, giving it a comfortable majority in the House and providing stability to its eight-month-old government in the state.
The results have also come as a shot in the arm for former Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who took a big political risk by quitting the Congress and joining the BJP in March.
With most of his loyalists winning the November 3 bypolls, Scindia, a Rajya Sabha MP, will look to cement his place in the BJP.
BJP candidates are leading with comfortable margins in three other assembly seats.
BJP minister Imarti Devi loses bypoll in Madhya Pradesh
In a setback to the BJP, its woman minister in Madhya Pradesh Imarti Devi lost bypoll from the Dabra assembly seat on Tuesday, an election official said.
Congress candidate Suresh Raje defeated Imarti Devi, considered a loyalist of BJP Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia, by a margin of 7,633 votes, the official said.

The BJP won all three Assembly constituencies where the party contested in the by-elections in Manipur, while an Independent candidate backed by the saffron camp secured one seat, the results of which were announced on Tuesday, officials said.
In a closely fought bypoll in Wangoi seat, ruling BJP's candidate Oinam Lukhoi Singh defeated coalition partner National People's Party nominee Khuraijam Loken Singh by 257 votes.
BJP's nominee Paonam Brojen Singh won the Wangjing Tentha constituency by a margin of 1,560 votes, defeating his nearest Congress rival Moirangthem Hemanta Singh.
BJP sweeps bypolls in Karnataka and Telangana
The ruling BJP on Tuesday swept the bypolls to two assembly seats in Karnataka by wresting them from the opposition Congress and JD(S) and stunned the ruling TRS in neighbouring Telangana by snatching the Dubbak segment held by it.
The saffron party's performance in Karnataka has given a boost to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa's stock amid talks about his replacement in some quarters while its Telangana win will be a morale-booster ahead of the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls.
In Karnataka's Sira, BJP created a history of sorts by recording its first ever victory there, while in the bitterly fought Dubbak elections, it reversed its electoral fortunes by winning a seat it lost to the the K Chandasekar Rao-led TRS in the general elections in 2018.
Odisha bypolls: BJD wrests Balasore from BJP, retains Tirtol
The ruling BJD in Odisha on Tuesday wrested the Balasore assembly seat from the BJP and retained Tirtol in the bypolls held last week, with its candidates beating the BJP nominees and pushing the Congress to the third place.
As the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates emerged victories in both the assembly segments, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his gratitude to the people for exercising their franchise amid the Covid-19 pandemic and supporting his party.
In Balasore, BJD candidate Swarup Kumar Das defeated his nearest BJP nominee Manas Kumar Dutta by a margin of 13,351 votes. Das bagged 84,097 votes while Dutta polled 70,746 votes, Chief Electoral Officer S K Lohani said.
People reposed faith in Modi's leadership: Nadda on bypoll results
BJP president JP Nadda on Tuesday attributed the party's victory in assembly bypolls in various states to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and congratulated respective chief ministers and heads of the party's state units.
In a series of tweets, Nadda said people across the country have reposed faith in Prime Minister Modi's leadership and the welfare work done by the Centre and state governments.
Nadda also congratulated chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karanataka and Manipur and presidents of the BJP's respective state units.
Jolt for TRS as BJP wins Dubbak Assembly bypoll in Telangana
In a boost to the BJP in Telangana, the party on Tuesday won the bypoll held to the Dubbak Assembly constituency, defeating the ruling TRS by a margin of 1,079 votes.
"BJP candidate won by 1,079 votes," Siddipet district Collector Bharati Hollikeri told PTI over phone.
In a close contest, BJP's M Raghunandan Rao got 63,352 votes, while the TRS nominee secured 62,273 votes.
Cheruku Srinivas Reddy of the Congress finished third with 22,196 votes.
The counting of votes reminded one of a T-20 cricket match as the lead position kept changing between the BJP and TRS, but the saffron party candidate had the last laugh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat on Tuesday won all the eight Assembly seats for which by-elections were held on November 3.
The BJP not only won all the seats, but also registered victories with significant margins, barring in one seat, over their Congress rivals. Except Morbi, all other seats registered winning margins of 17,000 to 20,000 votes.
'Modi hai toh mumkin hai', says Yogi Adityanath on BJP's performance in polls
Elated over BJP's performance in Bihar Assembly elections and bypolls in various states, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the poll results have reiterated that "Modi hai to mumkin hai", and the party has given hints of its performance in the future elections.
He was speaking to reporters at the UP BJP office here.
"Under the leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and completely setting aside all the speculation in Bihar, in today's results of Bihar and bypolls in various states, the public have proved that 'Modi hai to mumkin hai' (if there is Modi, then it is possible)," Adityanath said.
He also said that the BJP has repeated its electoral performance of 2017.
"The BJP in this bypoll has given hints about the future polls. The party candidates in the bye-elections are leading over their nearest rivals in the range of 17,000 to 32,000," he said.

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday said JD-U leader Nitish Kumar should thank it if he retains the post of Bihar chief minister despite his party winning less seats in the Assembly polls than ally BJP as the latest trends indicate.
Referring to last year's dramatic turn of events in Maharashtra, which saw the Shiv Sena severing ties with the BJP and forming government with ideological rivals NCP and the Congress, Sena MP Sanjay Raut said his party had shown what happens "when word is not kept" by an alliance partner.
"I heard BJP leaders saying in unison (on TV) that only Nitish babu will be the chief minister. Nitish babu should thank Shiv Sena for that. Not keeping promises will not happen in Bihar because the Shiv Sena has shown in Maharashtra what can happen if word is not kept," Raut said.
"Hence, if Nitish Kumar becomes Bihar chief minister, despite winning less number of seats (as compared to the BJP), he should thank the Shiv Sena for it," the Rajya Sabha MP said.

The BJP's Narayan Patel won Assembly byelection from Mandhata in Madhya Pradesh by defeating the Congress' Uttampal Singh by a margin of 22,129 votes, an election official said on Tuesday.
Counting for bypolls to 28 Assembly seats in the state started in the morning.
Patel got 80,394 votes while the Congress candidate got 58,265. The BSP's Jitendra got 1,561 votes while 1,652 votes went to NOTA.
Narayan Patel had won the seat in 2018 on Congress ticket. He joined the BJP by resigning as MLA in March 2020.

BJD continues to lead in Odisha bypolls
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates continued to lead in the counting of votes polled in the bypolls to Balasore and Tirtol Assembly constituencies in Odisha, said an election official on Tuesday.
BJD's Bijay Shankar Das was leading over BJP candidate Rajkishore Behera by 24,697 votes in Tirtol seat in Jagatsinghpur district.
By the end of 16th round, Das had polled 54,290 votes while Behera had secured 29,593 votes.
Congress candidate Himansu Bhusan Mallick has managed to get 14,084 votes, said an official.

Counting of votes polled in the November 3 by-elections to Dumka and Bermo assembly seats in Jharkhand began at 8 am on Tuesday amidst tight security, election officials said.
Security personnel, including central forces, have been deployed at the counting centres and CCTVs have been installed, state joint chief electoral officer Hiralal mandal said.
Counting personnel have been asked to adhere to the COVID-19 protocol, Mandal said.
Votes will be counted in 18 rounds in Dumka and 17 rounds in Bermo seat in Bokaro district. The process is expected to be completed by 3 pm, he said.

Nagaland bypoll result 2020 LIVE: Counting begins
Elaborate arrangements have been made and security tightened at two centres for today'scounting of votes for the by-elections to two assembly constituencies in Nagaland, an Election Commission official said.
The bypolls to two assembly seats - Southern Angami-I in Kohima and Pungro-Kiphire in Kiphire district - were necessitated following the deaths of the sitting legislators Vikho-o Yhoshu and T Torechu.

A day before the announcement of the results for bye-elections to seven Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday accused the BJP of rigging the elections in its favour.
He, however, did not elaborate on the accusation, and said he would provide detailed information after the results are out on Tuesday.
At a press conference after a number of former lawmakers from the BSP and the Congress joined the party, Yadav said, "The BJP has done 'dhandhli' (rigging), 'dhokha' (fraud) and whatever it could by (misusing) the administration. The government had made such an arrangement that the voters could not come out (to exercise their franchise)."
"I will give detailed information after the results of the bye-election are declared on November 10," he said.
UP bypoll result 2020 LIVE: Counting of votes to begin shortly
The counting of the votes polled in seven Uttar Pradesh Assembly seats, where bypolls were held last week, will be taken up on Tuesday amid opposition Samajwadi Party's (SP) charge that the ruling BJP has used the official machinery for "rigging and fraud" to win the elections.
An average of over 53 per cent voters exercised their franchise on November 3 to decide the electoral fortune of 88 candidates in Naugaon Sadat, Tundla, Bangarmau, Bulandshahr, Deoria, Ghatampur and Malhani.
Barring Malhani, which was with the SP, the other seats were in the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) kitty.
At a hurriedly convened virtual press conference, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday accused the BJP of indulging in "rigging, fraud and whatever it could through the administration to win the elections".
"The BJP has done rigging, fraud and whatever it could through (misusing) the administration. The government had made such arrangements that the voters should not come out. I will give detailed information after the results," he said.

Madhya Pradesh bypoll result 2020 LIVE: Baroda all set for counting today
All arrangements have been put in place for the counting of votes for the bypolls to Haryana's Baroda assembly seat on Tuesday, an official said.
The counting will start at 8 am, said Sonipat Deputy Commissioner Shaym Lal Poonia on Monday.
There will be 20 rounds of counting, he added.
Poonia said a three-tier security has been provided at the counting centre in Sonipat's Mohana.
The Baroda assembly seat had recorded an overall turnout of 68.57 per cent on November 3. There are 14 candidates in the fray from the constituency.
In the 2019 assembly elections, 69.43 per cent of voters had voted.
The Baroda assembly seat fell vacant in April following the death of Congress MLA Krishan Hooda, who had won it consecutively thrice in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

The ruling BJP and opposition Congress and JD-S in Karnataka are bracing up for the vote count on Tuesday in the two crucial Assembly and four Council segments where by-elections were held on November 3 and October 28 to fill vacancies caused for various reasons.
"Elaborate arrangements have been made for counting of votes in RR Nagar (Rajarajeshwarinagar) assembly seat in southwest Bengaluru and Sira assembly seat in Tumakuru district where the by-elections were held on November 3," an Election Commission official told IANS here.
A record 82.31 per cent voting was registered in Sira while it was only 45.24 per cent polling in RR Nagar.
Biennial elections for 4 Council seats were held on October 28 in the Karnataka West Graduates, Karnataka North-East Teachers, Bangalore Teachers and Karnataka South-East Graduates constituencies.

Elaborate arrangements have been made for the counting of votes polled in the Balasore and Tirtol assembly by-elections in Odisha amid strict adherence to the Covid-19 guidelines, an official said on Monday.
The counting of votes for the by-elections held on November 3 will begin from 8 a.m. on Tuesday, said Chief Electoral Officer S.K. Lohani.
He said the progress of the results will be announced after each round of counting is completed.
