Tamil Nadu election result 2021 LIVE updates: After a decade in Opposition, the M K Stalin-led DMK has won a convincing victory over arch-rival AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. Stalin, 68, is set to become the Chief Minister for the first time. Counting of votes for 49 of the 234 seats in Tamil Nadu election 2021 is still underway. The DMK-led alliance has won 124 and is ahead in 32. The AIADMK, on the other hand, has won 59 and is leading in 17 constituencies. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Tamil Nadu who voted for the National Democratic Alliance and said his party would continue to work for state's welfare and for nurturing the Tamil culture.

"I laud our workers who worked hard," he added.

Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan lost his maiden poll by a slender margin of 1,728 votes to BJP national women’s wing president Vanathi Srinivasan in Coimbatore South Assembly constituency.

The Election Commission is yet to declare winners for 49 seats.

DMK legislators to meet on Tuesday, elect Stalin as leader in House

The DMK's new MLAs will meet in Chennai on May 4 to choose M K Stalin as their Legislature party leader. Stalin, who led DMK to a comfortable win against the ruling AIADMK after a ten-year stint in the opposition, is set to take over as Chief Minister.

 In Tamil Nadu, the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) alliance put up a brave fight (85 seats) but could not save its government, yielding to the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance (149 seats), whose leader, M K Stalin will become chief minister for the first time. The Congress is a DMK ally.

A restricted set of voters can exercise postal voting. Through this facility, a voter can cast her vote remotely by recording her preference on the ballot paper and sending it back to the election officer before counting.

The Election Commission expects a slight delay in the announcement of results as there is an 89% increase in polling stations this time and therefore the number of EVMs/VVPATs has also gone up, while there is a reduction in the number of counting tables per hall to ensure social distancing within the closed premises. The first trend is expected by 10am. On average, there will be 15 rounds of counting in every constituency. So, by 4pm or 5pm, the first results can be expected, chief electoral officer Teeka Ram Meena told agencies.
