West Bengal election result LIVE: Mamata takes oath as CM for 3rd term

West Bengal election result 2021 LIVE updates: The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) won 213 seats. The party, which had 209 members in the outgoing Assembly, improved its 2016 tally. The state has a 294-member Assembly but election was countermanded in Shamsherganj and Jangipur constituencies due to the death of candidates. A party needed 147 seats for a simple majority in the House with an effective strength of 292. Today, Mamata Banerjee will be taking the oath as the chief minister of the state for the third time in a row.  The mercurial leader, however, lost by 1,956 votes in Nandigram to former protege-turned-BJP adversary Suvendu Adhikari.

Meanwhile, challenger Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell way below its expected number of seats; it has won 77.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Congress party, which ruled the state for nearly six decades between them, faced an unprecedented rout in West Bengal assembly elections. Neither could open its account. An alliance with the newly-formed ISF did not seem to have helped the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Congress.

Trinamool Congress successful in consolidating Muslim votes

The Trinamool Congress which scored a landslide victory in the assembly elections was successful in consolidating the Muslim votes and that had a direct impact on the results of the election. Of the 63 Muslim dominated assembly constituencies elections were held in 61 constituencies and the Trinamool Congress won 58 of them leaving two for the BJP and one for the Sanjukata Morcha.

The bulk of the Muslim dominated seats are mostly in four districts -- Murshidabad, Malda, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas. While Murshidabad has 16 Muslim dominated seats among the total 22 Assembly seats the rest of the three districts have 9 assembly seats each. However, elections were held in 61 of these total 63 seats because elections in two districts - Samserganj and Jangipur - were deferred because of the death of candidates. Among the rest of the 61 seats the Trinamool Congress managed to get 58 seats. (IANS)

Centre-state relationship: Going just got tougher for Narendra Modi govt

A more assertive non-Congress, non-BJP opposition is on the cards after the stupendous victory of the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the Left Front in Kerala, and the DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu.

This is bound to manifest itself in fora like the GST Council, but more immediately in the distribution of vaccines to handle the Covid-19 pandemic, as both Pinarayi Vijayan and Mamata Banerjee announced tackling the pandemic would be their top priority and made it clear that a slowdown in vaccine delivery to states not ruled by the BJP would not be tolerated. At her press conference after the results, Banerjee said her fight will be to ensure free vaccines to everyone across the country. Read on...

West Bengal election result 2021 LIVE: 'Neglecting Covid for polls has been costly for BJP'

The results of the Assembly elections held over the past 45 days or so have broadly been on the lines suggested by the exit polls with the standout exception of West Bengal, where the “hung assembly” narrative has been proven comprehensively wrong by the Trinamool Congress’ emphatic victory. When compared with the results of the 2016 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made remarkable gains. It has won close to 75 seats from just three in 2016 and got about 38 per cent of the vote. But the BJP was fighting to win, not come in second, so the outcome is a major setback for the party, given the vast amounts of money and resources deployed, with the prime minister, home minister, party chief, and sundry other party heavyweights addressing numerous rallies with intemperate rhetoric. Though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s high-risk gamble of abandoning her safe seat of Bhabanipur didn’t pay off, as she lost narrowly to her turncoat lieutenant Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram, there isn’t any doubt that overall the triumphal narrative of one diminutive woman defeated a brigade of powerful, bullying me, reads our Edtorial. Mamata Banerjee's wheelchair stops the BJP juggernaut in West Bengal

May 2, 2021, the hundredth birth anniversary of filmmaker Satyajit Ray, will forever belong to Mamata Banerjee. Defeating all odds, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), headed by her, coasted to a comfortable and credible majority in West Bengal, winning 216 seats, bettering its performance of 211 in the outgoing Assembly. While she lost her own seat, Nandigram, her party’s performance elicited opposition congratulations from across the country. Read on...

TMC wins 209 seats, leads in 4; BJP wins 76, ahead in 1

The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC looks set to improve its 2016 tally of 209 in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly. The party has already one 209 seats and is leading on one. Mamata Banerjee wins West Bengal again, to take vaccine fight to Centre now

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee landed a landslide victory for her Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Assembly election, the result of which was announced on Sunday, decimating the challenges by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But there remains a confusion over the outcome in Nandigram, the seat of her prestige fight with former party colleague and now a BJP member, Suvendu Adhikari. Read on...

As TMC surmounts Bengal challenge, some see Mamata pivot of politics against BJP going forward

With Mamata Banerjee powering the Trinamool Congress to a "landslide" victory in West Bengal overcoming 10 years of anti-incumbency, a full-throttle BJP campaign and a rebellious former lieutenant, she has become the "natural leader" to guide the Opposition's politics against the BJP in the coming days, some leaders said Sunday.

The TMC's victory in the keenly, and at times acrimoniously, fought elections in the state comes barely a month after Banerjee wrote to Opposition leaders urging them to unite against the BJP.

The TMC's success in many ways is being seen as a victory of the non-saffron parties whose leaders were quick to congratulate her, even though she trailed her former lieutenant, but now BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, in Nandigram.

West Bengal election results LIVE: National politics set to change as Mamata Banerjee keeps Bengal

The sometimes eccentric, frequently vindictive but deeply rooted chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is coasting towards victory, ensuring a place in history as the third consecutive non-Communist chief minister of Bengal. At last count, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was heading towards a tally of more than 200 seats, lower than its 2016 mark of 229 in a house of 292 (two constituencies did not go to the polls). True, the gains of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are no less stupendous: from 3 MLAs in the outgoing house to around XXX in this one. But as the song says, "the winner takes it all". And today must go down as Mamata Banerjee’s: who gave her all to the poll, even though her own election from Nandigram hangs in balance, writes Aditi Phadnis. Click here to read more
