IPL 2018: Delhi Daredevils beat Rajasthan Royals by 4 runs (D/L method)

In the 32nd match of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, Delhi Daredevils defeated Rajasthan Royals by 4 runs in the match filled with suspense. Delhi's unpredictable played a spoilsport as rain delayed the match. Earlier, Prithvi Shaw gave a great start to Delhi and Shreyas Iyer soon joined him in the attack. Rajasthan's nightmare ended as Shaw was dismissed just before his fifty. After that, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant kept the scoreboard running. The duo made their fifties and departed soon after that. Rain intervened just as 5 balls were remaining in Delhi's innings and the umpires called for covers. Delhi put up a massive total of 197 runs in 18 overs. The score was revised after the rain stopped and Mumbai had to chase 151 runs in 12 overs. 

Rajasthan Royals had a herculean task and opener Jos Butler was on a rampage as he brought up his fifty in just 18 balls. The pressure was back on Delhi. Amit Mishra got the better of him and gave Delhi the much-needed breakthrough. D Arcy Short hit three consecutive sixes but soon perished. Rajasthan managed a good chase and needed 15 runs in the last over. The result was undecided till last over but Delhi managed to steal a great victory in the end. Delhi Daredevils move to 6th position in Vivo IPL points table. RR are now in 7th position.

Swing and a miss, they still run and Tripathi is gone. very very very high in the air, Gowtham gets a four, Skipper Iyer dropped it. Last ball, six needed. Gowtham fails to get it over the rope. Delhi Daredevils win by 4 runs.  

Rajasthan Royals innings analysis after end of innings

After 2nd rain break at the end of Delhi Daredevils innings, under the D/L method, Rajasthan Royals needed 151 runs in 12 over. The playing conditions were also revised. Chasing a daunting target of 151 runs in 12 overs revised under D/L method, D’Archy Short and Jos Butler opened the innings for Rajasthan Royals while Shahbaz Nadeem came to bowl the 1st over of the innings and RR batsmen scored 14 runs of it keeping the run-rate in check. Boult came to bowl the second over and gave away 8 runs before Short was declared out of the last ball but later the decision is overturned as Short immediately took DRS. Avesh Khan came to bowl the 3rd over of the innings and Butler greeted him with two consecutive sixes before he was beaten by the slower ball. But Butler hit third six of the over of the 4th ball followed by a four in the point region. Avesh Khan conceded 23 runs in his first over as RR kept the required run-rate under check. Liam Plunkett came to bowl the 4th over and Butler again hit 6 of the first ball as Rajasthan Royals batsmen scored 12 runs.

After the end of the powerplay Rajasthan Royals scored 57 runs with Jos Butler (47 runs off 17 balls) and D’ Archy Short (8 runs off 6 balls) on the crease

Amit Mishra came to bowl the 5th over and Butler completed his fifty with a six of a reverse sweep. He scored the fifty in 18 balls. Mishra conceded 8 runs in his 1st over as required run rate increased to 13 runs per over. Avesh Khan came to bowl the 6th over of the innings and Short took a single off the first ball but Butler kept showing his hitting skills as he hit the 2nd ball for four in the square leg region. Avesh Khan conceded 13 runs in his 2nd over. Amit Mishra continued from the other end Short took a single to bring Butler to the strike who is in sublime form but this time Butler was not able to hit the big shot and took a single. Amit Mishra brought the first breakthrough for Delhi Daredevils as he got Butler (67 runs off 26 balls, 4x4 and 7x 6) stumped off the 4th ball. Mishra gave away only 4 runs in his 2nd over. Liam Plunkett came to bowl the 8th over of the innings and gave away only 3 runs of the first 5 balls before Short hit the 6th for a mighty six. 
After the end of the 8th Rajasthan Royals scored 92 runs for the loss of 1 wicket with Sanju Samson (3 runs off 4 balls) and D’ Archy Short (20 runs off 18 balls) on the crease

Trent Boult came to bowl the 9th over of the innings and got the wicket of in-form Sanju Samson (3 runs off 5 balls). Stokes came to the crease after the dismissal of Samson and got out of the last ball of the over, another failure. Boult conceded 8 runs and took 2 wickets as required run-rate jumped to 17 runs per over. Maxwell came to ball the 10th over and Short hit three consecutive sixes before he got out to score 4 in 4. D’ Archy Short scored 44 runs off 25 balls with the help of 2 fours and 4 sixes. Gowtham came to the crease after the wicket of Short. Maxwell gave away 21 runs in his 1st over as RR needed 30 runs in 12 balls. Plunkett came to bowl the penultimate over and Tripathi hit the second ball for six in the fine leg region. Gowtham collected 10 runs of the last 2 balls with the help of a six and four. Rajasthan Royals needed 15 runs in last 6 balls. Trent Boult came to bowl the last over of the match and started off with a wide. Tripathi took a single of the 1st over. Gowtham took double of the 3rd ball as RR needed 11 runs off the last 4 balls. Shreyas dropped a sitter which went for four but Boult holds the nerves and won the match for Delhi Daredevils.

Over 3: Kulkarni continues, Prithvi picks the length very early and wacks it for six. Dot ball. And again, what a shot for six, Prithvi hit it with some power. Good yorker, well defended. Powerfully struck through covers for four, there is no stopping Prithvi Shaw. Hit back to Kulkarni, he puts it down. Dropped. DD: 22-1

Over 4: Krishnappa Gowtham to Iyer, a single taken. Shaw played a cover drive to bring a boundary for DD. Single taken off the next ball. Iyer hit another four of the over followed by a single. Dot ball to end the over. DD: 33-1

Over 8: Gopal is back, Shaw hits it for SIX over cover. That one spun nicely, hit back to Gopal, he takes it, soft dismissal. He goes for 47. DD: 74-2. Rishab Pant is the new man in. Well defended. Another dot. Hit straight through the line for SIX. DD: 80-2

Delhi Daredevils innings analysis after 14 overs

Rajasthan Royals skipper won the toss and elected to bat first. After the toss match was delayed for one and a half hour and playing condition was revised.  Under the revised playing condition, DD vs RR match reduced to 18 overs per side, Powerplay overs were reduced to 5 overs from 6 overs. Under the new playing condition, 3 players can bowl a maximum of 4 overs. 

Colin Munro and Prithvi Shaw came to open the innings for Delhi Daredevils while Dhawal Kulkarni came to bowl the first over and took the wicket of dangerous Colin Munro. He gave away only 1 run in his first over. DD skipper Shreyas Iyer came to the crease after the fall of the first wicket. Johra Archer came to bowl the 2nd over of the innings and Iyer glanced the 4th ball of the over for 4 in the fine leg region and bowled brilliantly to concede 5 runs in his first over. Kulkarni continued from the other end and Shaw welcomed him with a six of the first ball in the leg side. Shaw continued his aggressive hitting and hit another six of the 3 ball followed by a four in the cover region. Dhawal nearly got the wicket of Shaw of the last ball but he himself dropped him of the last ball. Kulkarni conceded 16 runs in his 2nd over.

To restrict the run flow Krishnappa Gowtham was brought by Ajinkya Rahane and DD batsmen continued to maintain the run rate as they collected 11 runs with the help of 2 boundaries. Jaydev Unadkat came to bowl the 5th over and India’s U-19 captain Shaw continued to show his class as he hit 2 boundaries and a six to end the last over of the powerplay. Undakat conceded 15 runs in his 1st over. Shreyas Iyer came to bowl the 6th over and Iyer took a single of the first ball followed by a single of the 2nd ball taken by Shaw. Gopal pulled it back as bowled two dot balls but DD captain had some another plan as he hit a six of the 5th ball followed by another six to end the over. Gopal conceded 14 runs of his first over as DD were scoring at the run-rate of over 10 rpo. After the end of the 6th over Delhi Daredevils scored 62 runs for the loss of 1 wicket with Prithvi Shaw (38 runs off 19 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (24 runs off 16 balls) at the crease.

Ben Stokes came to bowl the 7th over and conceded only 6 runs, a tidy over given the power hitting by DD batsmen. Gopal continued from the other end and Shaw greeted him with a six over the cover fielder but Shaw’s masterclass ended with a soft dismissal. Prithvi Shaw scored 47 runs off 25 balls with the help of 4 fours and an equivalent number of sixes. Rishabh Pant came to the crease after the dismissal of Shaw and hit a six to end the 8th over. Gopal conceded 12 runs and took a wicket of his 2nd over. Ben Stokes came to bowl the 9th over of the innings and gave away 4 runs before Pant hit the last ball of the over for 4 over the mid-wicket fielder. Jofra Archer came to bowl the 10th over and didn’t give a single run of the first ball before Iyer upper cut the 3rd ball of the over for four. Pant hit the last ball of the over for six to collect 11 runs of the Archer’s 2nd over. After the end of the 10th over Delhi Daredevils scored runs for the loss of wickets with Shreyas Iyer (33 runs off 24 balls)and Rishabh Pant (16 runs off 10 balls)

Unadkat came to bowl the 11th over of the innings and DD batsmen collected 10 runs as they were maintaining the run-rate. Gowtham came to bowl the 12th over and Iyer hit a six of the 2nd ball and sensibly took a single off the next ball. Pant continued his onslaught from the other end hit two consecutive boundaries of the 4th and 5th ball of the over as DD batsmen collected 16 runs of the Gowtham’s 2nd over. Kulkarni came to bowl 13th over and Iyer took a double of the 1st ball followed by a single. Pant pulled the 3rd ball of the over for six over the keeper’s head. It seemed Kulkarni lost his line and length amid the onslaught as he bowled 3 consecutive wide to end the over with two consecutive four by Pant. Ben Stokes came to bowl the 14th over and Iyer took a single off the first ball while Pant hit another cover drive to bring his 7th boundary. Pant took a single off the next ball to complete his 3rd half century of the IPL 2018. Pant hit a six to collect 15 runs of the Stoke’s 3rd over. After the end of the 14th over Delhi Daredevils scored 160 runs for the loss of 2 wickets with Shreyas Iyer (49 runs off 33 balls) and Rishabh Pant (58 runs off 25 balls) at the crease.

Jaydev Unadkat came to bowl the 15th over of the innings and took two crucial wickets of Shreyas Iyer (50 runs off 35 balls, 3 fours and 3 sixes) and Rishabh Pant (as he conceded 12 runs in his 3rd over. Jofra Archer came to bowl the 16th over and gave 3 runs of the first two balls before Shankar hit the 3rd ball for six over the mid-wicket boundary followed by a four of the 4th ball. Archer conceded 15 runs in his 3rd over. Unadkat came to bowl the 17th over and Shankar plated a fine shot to bring his 2nd four but got perished while trying to score big shots. Shankar scored 17 runs off 6 balls with the strike rate of 283.33. Plunkett came to the crease after the dismissal of Shankar. Unadkat gave away 9 runs in his last over of the match. Jofra Archer came to a bowl last over of the innings and got the wicket of Maxwell before play halted due to rain.
