In the 39th match of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 5 runs in a last-ball thriller and retained their top position on the VIVO IPL points table. Sunrisers Hyderabad had a reputation of defending low totals and did it again against RCB. Parthiv Patel and Manan Vohra gave a fine start as looked to attack right from the start, shedding the defensive approach behind. Shakib trapped Parthiv for LBW, this made RCB captain Virat Kohli come to the crease. Kohli started his inning with the signature cover drive and soon disrupted Shakib's bowling figures. A twist came in RCB's all-well tale when Shakib Al Hasan got the prized wicket of RCB captain Virat Kohli, Yusuf Pathan deserved equal credit for that as he took a one-handed catch stretching his right arm. Spinners were deployed from both ends to seize the opportunity and it went that way as De Villiers soon followed Kohli to pavilion after Rashid's googly hit the stumps.

Hyderabad bowlers kept a tight vigil on the run flow. Mandeep Singh and Colin de Grandhomme were virtually the last hope for RCB and they needed to rescue their team from this situation. To snatch a victory from the mighty 'orange army' looked a herculean task now. Both the batsmen to elude the bowlers from taking any wicket till the last over. With 12 runs needed off the last over, RCB had to pull something extraordinary and Hyderabad needed another master defence. Bhuvneshwar Kumar did not let the batsmen cross the magic number in the last over. Earlier, Alex Hales and Shikhar Dhawan opened for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Deviating from the usual, RCB deployed Moeen Ali with the ball in the first over and reaped the benefit as the openers observed cautious approach. Tim Southee proved instrumental in getting the first breakthrough for RCB just as Hales was removed in the third over. SRH captain Kane Williamson made his intention clear from the first ball. He went on to score a crucial half-century. RCB managed to bundle out SRH for 146.

Shikhar Dhawan and Alex opened the innings for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Moeen Ali came to bowl the first over of the innings and gave away 4 runs as kept the things tight for RCB. Umesh Yadav bowled the 2nd over and started off with a dot ball followed by another dot ball. Dhawan pulled the 4th ball of the innings for four in the mid-wicket region. Hales hit the last ball for the 2nd boundary of the over as Yadav conceded 10 runs in his first over. Tim Southee came to bowl the third over and started off with a dot ball followed by a single in the mid-wicket region as Dhawan was not able to time the ball. Southee got the first breakthrough for RCB as Hales played a cross-batted shot. Southee strayed down the leg-side of the wicket and Williamson glanced the ball for four. Southee conceded 6 runs in his first over.

Umesh Yadav continued from other end and Williamson took a single off the first ball followed by another single Dhawan. Yadav conceded 5 runs in his 2nd over. Southee bowled the 5th over and started off with a wide. Williamson played a classic cover drive for four in the cover region. Southee conceded 12 runs as SRH batsmen looked to accelerate the run-rate. Mohammed Siraj came to bowl the last over of the powerplay and took the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan as he again failed to give SRH a solid start. Manish Pandey came to the crease after the dismissal of Dhawan as Siraj conceded only 2 runs in his 1st over. RCB bowler bowled with great line and length as they didn't give easy runs to Sunrisers Hyderabad and kept run-rate in check.

Chahal came to bowl the 7th over and conceded only 4 runs as SRH batsmen failed to score big runs. Moeen Ali came to bowl the 8th over and conceded only 5 runs as SRH were scoring with a run-rate of 5.87. Chahal continued to bowl from the other end and got the wicket of Manish Pandey as the ball stopped after pitching.

Moeen Ali returned for his third over, looking to strengthen the grip that RCB had made in the preceding overs. Taking advantage of the lack of spin on the ball Shakib went in for two consecutive boundaries over deep third-man and a straight drive. Moeen Ali ended a comparatively expensive over conceding 11 runs. SRH looked to change gears in the eleventh over trying to hit every ball hard. However, apart from a boundary on the on side in Chahal's over, the batsmen were finding it difficult to hit the ball across the fence. The over ended with a free hit which also ended up in a dot delivery for SRH. Grandhomme came with the 12th over and was struggling with his line. 8 runs came off this over. Srh was 76/3 after 12 overs.

Mohammed Siraj returned in 13th over to bowl the second one out of his quota of 4 overs. Siraj started doing what he does best, bowling quick short-pitch deliveries to create problems for the batsmen. Williamson and Shakib both struggled to score runs against Siraj who conceded only 4 runs in his over. RCB captain continued to build the pressure with pace attack and brought back Umesh Yadav to bowl the 14th over the innings. SRH batsmen struggled in the beginning but halfway through the over Yadav bowled two loose deliveries which Williamson was able to hit for a four and a six over third man. Looking to build on the momentum, courtesy of an expensive over by Yadav, Williamson hit Chahal for a six on the third ball of the fifteenth over. Williamson reached his fifty in 35 balls. SRH was 105/3 after 15 overs.

Siraj started the 19th over on a high by hitting the bull's eye. He clean-bowled the dangerous man Yusuf Pathan on the very first ball of the over. Saha on the crease hit a flat six on the third ball straight down the ground. Siraj made a comeback with a quick short-pitch delivery. Saha tried a cheeky scoop over fine-leg and got clean bowled. Tim Southee came back in the 20th over to conclude an impressive show of bowling by RCB throughout the innings. With the lower order batsmen on the crease, the pressure was on SRH to score runs in the last over of the innings. Batsmen were struggling, pressure mounted and this led to two run-outs in the over. On the last ball, Southee got Sandeep Sharma's wicket, making it 3/30 for him, and SRH got all out they could only manage to post a total of 146/10 in their quota of 20 overs, at a run rate of 7.30 runs per over.

Mallya effect: Rs 1 billion diverted from IPL team RCB's holding company: Even as United Spirits Ltd (USL) investigated a massive financial fraud at the company at the time businessman Vijay Mallya was at the helm of its affairs, the alleged financial irregularities spread to the company’s Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as well. Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd (RCSPL), the holding company of RCB, said in its latest financial statement filed before India’s regulators that it had detected financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 1.15 billion (Rs 115 crore).

What Australian veteran Mark Waugh said about RCB death bowling: Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh has attributed the poor performance of the Virat-Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ongoing edition of the IPL to their death bowling. "Death bowling is a major area of concern for RCB currently as their bowlers are too expensive towards the end," Waugh, a Star Sports Select Dugout expert, was quoted as saying in a media release. "They have had chances to win games but they just can"t find the right set of combination in the last couple of overs which is affecting the team's results," added Waugh, who played 128 Tests for Australia and scored 8,029 runs.

What Virat Kohli said after RCB lost the game against CSK: Kohli, on his part, referred to the dropped catches of Dwayne Bravo by Parthiv Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal. Chennai were in trouble at that stage but chances went abegging. "It was a close game. Dropped catches don't help," Kohli said. "It wasn't the ideal day for us: losing so many wickets. But that's how this game goes. We gave a really good effort in the second half. The wicket played slow throughout which was surprising. Had we taken or chances, we could have made it harder for themselves," the RCB skipper lamented.
