MHRD appoints Kumar Mangalam Birla as IIM-A's new chairman

Kumar Mangalam Birla
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on Friday appointed Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla as the new chairman of Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), according to sources.

"The ministry has sent a notification to IIM-A on Kumar Mangalam Birla's appointment as the new chairman of the Board of Governors," sources said. Birla's name was finalised from among a shortlist of three names sent by a search committee set up by IIM-A's Board of Governors.

Sources said appointment of an IIM chairman follows three processes including invitation to the candidate by MHRD, acceptance by the candidate and a final appointment.  Kumar Mangalam Birla too has received the notification and accepted the appointment, it has been learnt.

Apart from Birla, Infosys chairman R Seshasayee and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh were part of the shortlist finalised by the new search committee, which was sent to the ministry headed by union minister Prakash Javadekar.

In May this year, Javadekar's predecessor Smriti Irani had rejected the previous shortlist comprising Parekh, Seshasayee and Hero MotoCorp CMD Pawan Munjal, following which the search committee headed by interim IIM-A chairman Pankaj Patel sent a revised list which included Birla's name.
