Two Bengal VCs given honorary colonel rank

Jadavpur University Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das and his Kalyani University counterpart Shankar Kumar Ghosh were on Monday granted the rank of Honorary Colonel by the Central government for furtherance of NCC activities in their respective universities.

At the investiture ceremony organised at Fort William in Kolkata, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee conferred the ranks to the two Vice Chancellors in presence of National Cadet Corps (NCC) Director General Lt. General P.P. Malhotra, an official release said.

Both Vice Chancellors will hold the rank of 'Colonel Commandant' in the NCC for the duration of their office.

Chatterjee praised the professionalism and commitment of NCC officers and instructors who train young boys and girls to provide leadership and direction to the nation in the future.

He expressed satisfaction about various activities undertaken by NCC cadets in West Bengal, like sailing in the Hooghly river from Farakka to Kolkata and traffic management during festive season.

On the sidelines of the programme, both the Vice-Chancellors spoke about extending more support to NCC activities in their respective universities.
