A fighting 95-run knock from Jermaine Blackwood helped West Indies beat England cricket team by 4 wickets in the first Test match of 3-match series at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton on Sunday. It was a 73-run stand between Roston Chase ( 37 off 88 balls) and Blackwood after Lunch that made the difference for the visitors after they were reduced to 27-3 at Lunch. With this international cricket successfully returned in bio-secure environment during coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, Jofra Archer's two wickets gave West Indies early problems as it chases a modest target of 200 on the final day to win the first Test against England. Archer removed Kraigg Brathwaite (4) and Shamarh Brooks (0), and Mark Wood added the wicket of Shai Hope for 9, leaving the tourists on 35-3 at lunch.

West Indies had the added problem of opener John Campbell retiring hurt after being hit on the toe with a yorker from Archer. The West Indies team said Campbell would come out to bat again if needed.

Eng vs WI 1st Test: What made final day interesting

England’s lead: England eked out a 170-run lead on Day 4 of the first test against the West Indies, with all outcomes still possible in the first match since the resumption of international cricket under the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic.

Late West Indian flair: The West Indies pace attack took five wickets in the final session of Day 4 to reduce England to 284-8 at stumps at an empty Rose Bowl on Saturday, making the tourists marginal favourites with the pitch slow but yet to misbehave.

English stars on Day 4: Zak Crawley (76) and Dom Sibley (50) were the two batsmen who got half-centuries, while England captain Ben Stokes chipped in with 46 before the late Windies fightback. "It should be tight if we bowl well tomorrow, especially if we get a lead of 200," Crawley said after the Day 4 proceedings.

That will be on the shoulders of unbeaten batsmen Jofra Archer (5) and Mark Wood (1), with James Anderson to come in at No. 11.

Windies stars on Day 4: Shannon Gabriel bowled Ollie Pope and Dom Bess in the last hour to finish with figures of 3-62 off his 18 overs. Joseph was also impressive, taking 2-40 off 16 overs.

Eng vs WI 1st Test LIVE UPDATES: The wisden Trophy and England, West Indies rivalry

The rivalry between England and West Indies goes back to 1928, when West Indies cricket team toured England for a three match Test series. The hosts had white washed West Indies 3-0. In the first 10 Test series played between the two teams from 1928 to 1959-60, England had won five series while the Caribbean side won only two.

As the rivalry gained popularity, England vs West Indies Test series was named as The Wisden Trophy in 1963.

Why Wisden Trophy?

To commemorate the hundredth edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, England vs West Indies Test series has been named as The Wisden Trophy. The trophy is named after the famous cricketing publisher Wisden and was presented by John Wisden & Co.

The Windies cricket team currently holds the trophy after a 2-1 victory over England in 2019. England held the trophy for nine years, after beating the West Indies 3–1 to regain it in 2000.

Eng vs WI 1st Test LIVE UPDATES: Windies coach is highly pleased with his bowlers performance

As Windies scalped five wickets on the final session of day four against England, Windies coach Phil Simmons has said that he was pleased with the performance of all bowlers.

The coach also added that all bowlers displayed patience throughout the day and as a result, the team bagged five wickets in the final session of the day.

His remarks came after the conclusion of day four of the first Test. Windies has restricted England to 284/8 and as a result, the hosts have a lead of just 170.

"It showed the persistence of the bowlers. We'd been fighting all day and Stokes and Zak started to take the bowling apart. But the persistence of Jason was rewarded and then Alzarri's spell was a huge spell too," said Simmons. READ THE FULL ARTICLE HERE

Eng vs WI 1st Test LIVE UPDATES: England should drop Denly, feels Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels the out of form Joe Denly should be the one making way for skipper Joe Root in the second Test against the West Indies instead of young Zak Crawley.

In the second Test, scheduled to begin on Thursday in Manchester, either Denly or Crawley is expected to be replaced by Root, who missed the series-opener to be with his wife for the delivery of their second child.

"England have a decision to make on Denly. Crawley surely has to stay in the side," Vaughan told 'BBC Sport'.

"Joe Denly played the way he has played in all of his 15 Tests. It's been the same story. He did the hard yards then made a mistake," Vaughan added.

Denly, who plays at No 3, struggled with the bat in the opener, scoring 18 and 29 in the first and second innings respectively. The 34-year-old has failed to breach the 40-run mark in eight innings.

Denly, who made his debut last year, averages 29.53 in 15 Tests and has failed to capitalise on good starts. His highest score of 94 came against Australia in 2019.

Broad 'frustrated, angry, gutted' after being dropped from playing 11

Seasoned England pacer Stuart Broad on Friday said he felt "frustrated, angry and gutted" after being dropped from the opening Test against West Indies, adding that he sought clarifications over his future in the team.

The hosts opted to go for James Anderson, Mark Wood and Jofra Archer alongside stand-in captain Ben Stokes and spinner Dom Bess, leaving out Broad from the first Test which started at The Ageas Bowl on Wednesday.

Broad, who is England's second highest wicket-taker of all time with 485 scalps in the longest format of the game, last missed a home Test eight years ago when he was rested against West Indies in 2012.

"I found out about 6pm the night before the game. Stokesy told me just that they're going with extra pace in these conditions," Broad said on Sky Sports' 'Player Zone'.

"I've been frustrated, angry and gutted - because it's quite a hard decision to understand. I've probably bowled the best I've ever bowled in the last couple of years. I felt like it was my shirt having been in the team through the Ashes and going to South Africa and winning there," he added.

The 34-year-old, who finished as the team's top wicket-taker in the Ashes last year and in the previous series in South Africa, said he received a positive feedback from national selector Ed Smith. READ FULL ARTICLE HERE
