At the toss, captain Kohli said that KL Rahul will open for India in this World Cup, and the right-hander displayed his class at the top with scintillating 24-ball 54. He didn't spare any of England's bowlers and got his team off to a flying start with an strike rate of over 200.

Ishan Kishan opened the innings in Rohit's absence and after getting dropped twice sent the English bowlers to a leather-hunt during his 46-ball 70. He went back to pavallion voluntarily to provide other batters a chance to bat. Kohli fell short, but Pant came in at number four and delivered a blistering performance that included three sixes. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya appeared a little scratchy, but they only had a few deliveries to deal with before getting the touch back.

Earlier, Mohammed Shami snapped three wickets but Jonny Bairstow smashed a 36-ball 49 to help England post a challenging 188 for 5.

Besides Shami (3/40), fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah (1/26) and spinner Rahul Chahar (1/43) were also among wickets after India skipper Virat Kohli decided to bowl at the ICC Academy Ground here.

Bairstow hit one six and had four hits to the fence in his knock, while Liam Livingstone (30) also contributed with the bat.

But it was Moeen Ali's whirlwind 20-ball 43 which powered England to a good score in the end.

England will play its first Super 12 round match against defending champions West Indies. Meanwhile, Indian cricket team will begin its T20 WC campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24.

Virat Kohli to bat at Number 3 spot during ICC T20 World Cup 2021

India captain Virat Kohli on Monday said he will bat at number three instead of opening the innings in the ICC T20 World Cup with KL Rahul having sealed the second opener's slot alongside Rohit Sharma.

The Indian skipper kept it open-ended when asked about the team's top-six batters going into the opening match of the tournament against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24.

"Things were different before IPL, now it's difficult to look beyond KL Rahul at the top of the order. Rohit is a no-brainer. World-class player, he's been solid up front. I will be batting at 3. That's the only news I can give to start off," Kohli said at the toss before the warm-up game against England.

Rahul emerged as the third highest scorer in the IPL with 628 runs besides hitting the most number of sixes (30) in the tournament.

"We are pretty sorted in terms of how we are going to start in the first game (versus Pakistan)."

The objective behind the two warm-up matches is to give game time to everyone as they get back into the groove after a short break.

IND vs ENG warm-up game: PITCH REPORT

Here's what Dale Steyn and Deep Dasgupta said during pitch report

Now that the sun has gone down, it should skid on a bit more. West Indies batted a bit slow, Pakistan did show that the wicket is getting better. Should be more runs than the first game.

Here's what India captain Virat Kohli said after the toss

Virat Kohli: We will bowl first. In the past, we've been successful. As a result, we wish to channel that same energy. The IPL is a close second, but this is the most important. What important is adaptability and how the game is played. We have a pretty good idea of how we'll start the first game. We'll try to get the majority of them some game time. Before the IPL, things were different; now, it's difficult to look beyond KL Rahul. Up front, he's been a rock. I'll be batting at number 3. For the time being, that's all I have to say.

Indian cricket team news (bowlers)

In the spin bowling department, Ravindra Jadeja may have two spinners playing with him and Varun Chakravarthy is all but confirmed if he remains fit. The third spinner's choice is between Rahul Chahar's leg-breaks and R Ashwin's off-breaks.

During the captain's meet, skipper Virat Kohli praised Chahar junior for extracting good pace off the slow UAE wickets, which has enabled him to keep the more seasoned Yizvendra Chahal out of the team.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to be the two pacers but if the team plays a spinner less, then Shardul Thakur's inclusion will provide the depth required.

IND vs ENG warm-up match: Kishan might get a chance in middle order today

Kishan was brilliant as Rohit's opening partner in the last two games as he nearly took Mumbai Indians into the play-offs with two blazing fifties.

If Rahul is the team's preferred choice, Kishan might just force Hardik into the No. 6 slot in the batting order, which is ideal for a finisher. For MI, both Hardik and Kishan had underwhelming returns in the UAE leg.

Hardik is another big factor in this line-up as chances of him bowling full tilt or for that matter bowling at all are very less.

In this situation if the team punts on him, expecting that his 'MS Dhoni-esque' helicopter shots will come off, they would have to decide which is a better slot for him. Is it above Rishabh Pant at No. 5, or at No. 6, where he may get only 15 balls at the max to show his prowess.

Who will open for India in today's match?

Vice-captain Rohit Sharma is a certainty at the top but it would be a tough choice between Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul as his opening partner.

It could well be a case where both are given a fair go at the top of the order to see who is in better touch.

Rahul will be the favourite considering that he has the experience of playing pressure matches and is in good form having amassed 626 runs (including 30 sixes) at a strike-rate of 138.80 in 14 IPL games.

Such numbers make him the favourite to pip Kishan but it is worth mentioning that Rahul's statistic improved substantially during an inconsequential game for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings, in which he scored 98 not out off 42 balls with eight sixes and seven fours.

Otherwise, he has not exactly got the move-on in power play overs and has only been able to accelerate towards the end in other games.

IND vs ENG warm-up game: Will Hardik Pandya bowl in today's match?

All-rounder Hardik Pandya's form and few batting slots will be foremost on captain Virat Kohli's mind as India look to make the most of two T20 World Cup warm-up matches starting with a game against England on Monday.

With all the Indian players coming straight from the recently-concluded IPL, match practice isn't a problem for Kohli and his men but getting the perfect combination on the park before the high-profile opening game against Pakistan on October 24 is a priority.

Against England and the Wednesday's game versus Australia, the Indian team management would look to give the players who are still not automatic choices in the playing XI, more overs to bat or bowl to get a better idea about their current form.
