IND vs AUS 4th Test Day 1 highlights: Debutant Natarajan shines; AUS 274-5

The hosts were reduced to 17 for 2 after opting to bat on a bouncy and batting wicket but recovered later, thanks mainly to Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne's 108 was the cornerstone of Australia's 274 for 5 at stumps on the opening day of fourth and final Test against India at The Gabba, Brisbaneon Friday.

The hosts were reduced to 17 for 2 after opting to bat on a bouncy and batting wicket but recovered later, thanks mainly to Labuschagne. At stumps, captain Tim Paine and Cameron Green were batting on 38 and 28 respectively.

Labuschagne's 204-ball knock had nine boundaries. He was dropped on 37 by Ajinkya Rahane off the bowling of Navdeep Saini.

The Australians scored runs at a fair clip in the second session after they were 65 for 2 at lunch, with Labuschagne going great guns. The hosts added 89 runs from 27 overs and lost just one wicket in that session.

But India made a comeback in the final session, with debutant T Natarajan getting rid of Labuschagne and Matthew Wade (45) in the space of two overs after the duo had stitched 113 runs for the fourth wicket.

The other debutant Washington Sundar got rid of the dangerous Steve Smith (36) for his first Test wicket.

Playing 11 that will be fielded deserve to represent India: Rathour

Interestingly, Rathour's another comment on playing XI was pretty telling where he put up a brave front, stating that all who would take the field deserve to play for India.

"With or without injuries, the eleven that India will put up will be the best eleven on the ground and all of them deserve to be there. All of them deserve the opportunity to play Test cricket and if they play to their potential, I don't see why won't do well.

"So we are again backing our processes and backing our players," the former opener said hinting that both Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur are in fray.

WATCH: Here's why Harris find a place in Australia playing 11

Who will win Gavaskar-Border Trophy?

If the fourth Test at Gabba ends in a draw, then India will retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy as the side had won the series last time around.

Can India breach the Australia's fortress?

The bigger task awaiting India is rewriting the record books. If India has to win at The Gabba, they have to break a 33-year-old record held by the hosts. Australia last lost a Test at the fortress in 1988 against the West Indies. Since then, it has been all Australia. But the pitch is expected to offer assistance to the quick bowlers and this might just work in India's favour as the batting of the hosts relies heavily on Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.

Will Bumrah find a place in India playing 11 for 4th test?

A major boost for the Indian team is that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is still in contention for a place in the XI for the game. He is currently working with the medical team and a final call will be taken on Friday morning revealed batting coach Vikram Rathour during the post-match press conference.

But the visiting camp is hampered by injures and in the fourth Test, there are further changes that need to be made. In the third Test, Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari got injured and the duo will sit out the fourth Test. Now, it would be interesting to see who the team management decides to bring in for these players

How India came back in 4-match Test series

Bundled out for 36 in the first Test in Adelaide, not many gave India a chance to even compete with the Australians in the remaining three Tests, let alone win a game in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli. But the boys showed great character under stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane and the series stands level at 1-1 with the final game set to be played at The Gabba from Friday.

Predictions were made that the team would be drubbed 4-0, but what has transpired in the last two Tests at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Sydney Cricket Ground has shown that this Indian line-up loves a challenge.

After winning in Melbourne by eight wickets, the battered and bruised Indian line-up batted out the final day of the third Test to walk away with one of the most famous draws in Test history and now both India and Australia will head into the final Test with everything to play for.
R Ashwin is embraced by Ajinkya Rahane, as teammate Mohammed Siraj, right, watches following play on the final day of the third cricket test between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground

Tim Paine on Gabba Test on the eve of IND vs AUS 4th Test

For Tim Paine, the series-decider couldn't have been played at the better venue than the bouncy Woolloongabba or Gabba for fans around the world.

"From a distance it looks like it always does," you could gauge the confidence in Paine's voice even as he gave the news of young Will Pucovski's shoulder injury ruling him out of playing eleven.

"We love playing here, and one of the main reasons is because that wicket. This is a good place to come and play, because I don't have to go and look at it, I know what is going to be like," he said and it was like warning to Indian team that looks more like a second string A team save three senior batsmen.

India vs Australia 4th Test preview

After denting the ego of mighty Australians with their bruised and battered bodies in a Sydney epic, Ajinkya Rahane's wounded India will take no prisoners in a 'winners take all' fourth Test, starting Friday on the liveliest of tracks in the series.

Australia need a win to regain Border-Gavaskar Trophy but a draw will be enough for India to retain it for another couple of years.

There are times when the human body responds differently to the adrenaline rush and the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari have given their million fans a reason to believe in their gumption that was on display in Sydney.

Jasprit Bumrah played with an abdominal strain and didn't want to come out despite the experience was painful and Ravindra Jadeja with a broken thumb was ready to do what Malcolm Marshall did with a fractured wrist three decades back.

They battled against everybody -- the racist ones in the galleries, the abusive one behind the stumps and those lethal ones with the shiny red nut that broke a few bones but could not dent the steely resolve of the Indians.

The new India that Virat Kohli so raved about, is now ready to battle a whole new set of adversities at a venue where Australia hasn't lost a Test since 1988.

There won't be a Jadeja and Bumrah and on one of the most difficult tracks, it couldn't have gotten more worse for India. And insult to injury is Mayank Agarwal being hit on the forearm in the nets and Ashwin battling back spasms.

"We will take a call tomorrow. The medical team is working with all the injured players. If Bumrah is fit, he plays, if he is not fit, he doesn't play," batting coach Vikram Rathour said at the pre-match conference.
