India fields two debutants in a Test for first time in 7 years

When batsman Shubman Gill and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj will make Test debut against Australia in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here on Saturday, it will be the first time in seven years -- since November 2013 -- that India would field two debutants in the same match.

Interestingly, the last time India handed Test caps to two players, they were also a fast bowler and a batsman. It was in the first of a two-match Test series between India and West Indies when the hosts Rohit Sharma, who was by then a seasoned campaigner in limited overs, and pacer Mohammed Shami made Test debut.

India vs Australia 2nd Test Live toss updates

The live toss between India and Australia will take place at 4:30 am IST.

How many Tests India won at iconic MCG

India have won three Tests in the last 73 years at the MCG and Rahane reckons the wicket will be a bit different this time.

"See generally MCG is ... 2018 was slightly different wicket, but generally when we played here in 2014 and the other teams when they played here, it is actually a very good wicket, plays really well," Rahane said.

It's possible that there could be turn on offer as India have two spinners on board.

"Matchday will be different. We don't know that, we have to go and see and adapt to the wicket as quick as possible.

Rahane on debutant Mohammed Siraj

Mohammed Siraj will also make his debut on Saturday and Rahane termed him "equally talented" even though he didn't name him as the interaction with media happened before India released their playing XI.

Rahane expects Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav to form a formidable partnership as he guides the unit from gully, where he will be stationed.

"Apart from Jasprit, Umesh (Yadav) and the guy (Siraj) who will play instead of (Mohammed) Shami tomorrow, they are also equally talented.

"Umesh has been doing really well for so many years, so it is all about bowling in partnerships for us."

Rahane on debutant Shubman Gill

Young opener Shubman Gill will make his debut in the second Test and Rahane said he wants to give him and Mayank Agarwal freedom and not put them under undue pressure.

"See openers role, not only in Australia, but everywhere is really crucial, I don't want to put any pressure on our openers, just want to give them freedom to play their game.

"... when you get that partnership going, when you get that foundation, then it becomes really easy for coming batsmen."

Rahane on India's poor show in 2nd innings of Adelaide Test

"Talking about last Test match, see comparatively we had two good days, just one bad hour, where we actually lost it completely," he said.

"The chat was all about backing ourself as an individual and as team, play to our strengths and whatever we have planned in the first Test match just stick to that."

Rahane on Australia's mind game ahead of Boxing Day Test

India's stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane on Friday said he would rather focus on his team than worrying about Australia's "mind games" ahead of the 'Boxing Day' Test starting here on Saturday.

Australia coach Justin Langer had on Thursday said he would be "happy" if the Indian team is under a bit of stress after the humiliating defeat in the first Test and would like to put pressure on Rahane, who is taking charge in absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli.

"Australians are very good at playing mind games and I will let them do that. We are focussing on ourselves, what we want to do as a unit and we are going to back our every individuals," Rahane said on the eve of the match.

Not as expressive or eloquent as Kohli, Rahane repeated his answers in a loop which was all about "playing to your strengths and backing each other".

"It is a proud moment for me leading India, obviously it is a great opportunity, responsibility as well but I don't want to take any pressure," said the dependable middle-order batsman.

India a proud cricket country, won't roll over at MCG: Tim Paine

Australian captain Tim Paine on Friday said a "proud" cricketing nation like India is not going to roll over like Adelaide, in the Boxing Day Test here and singled out KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as potential threats.

India are heading into the second Test, starting at the MCG from Saturday, on the back of a humiliating defeat in the series-opener in Adelaide.

But Paine is in no mood to take it easy against their battered opponents who collapsed to their record lowest Test score of 36 last week.

"Well, we can't pay any attention to mental scars or whatever thing they're talking about," the skipper, who was named Man of the Match in the first Test, said during a virtual press conference.

"We know India is a proud cricket country, an extremely talented Test match side with lots of dangerous players."

Paine, who has led Australia in 20 Tests so far, recalled the Ashes last year when England bounced back in the fifth Test to level the series after being 1-2 down.

"We saw in England that we can come unstuck pretty quickly... the moment we take our foot off the pedal and think we're going all right.

"A huge focus of ours since that fifth Test since the Ashes has been winning after winning. But we've been fantastic in how we've prepared for this game."

Melbourne weather forecast

There is no chance of rainfall on Day 1 of India vs Australia Test that is December 26. While the last session of Day 2 may see some rainfall, there is no forecast of rain for last three days of the Boxing Day Test.

Why Gill picked over Shaw?

Gill's languid approach and that extra second while facing fast bowlers, coupled with a way tighter technique than Shaw, might just give the dressing room the confidence required in testing times like these.

He will have the company of Mayank Agarwal, who would be wanting to do an encore, if not better, of his performance at a venue where he made his Test debut.

India to play its 100th Test match today against Australia

The iconic Boxing Day Test starting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here on Saturday will be India's 100th match in the traditional format against Australia, the BCCI said on Friday.

"#TeamIndia will play their 100th Test against Australia when the teams square off in the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at the MCG, starting tomorrow," the BCCI tweeted.

India have made four changes in their playing XI while Australia are set to field an unchanged side at the MCG.

Special tribute to Dean Jones planned on first day of Boxing Day Test: Report

The opening day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the MCG on Saturday will see a special tribute to former Australia batsman Dean Jones, who died in September, according to a report.

Jones' wife Jane said it was fitting that the tribute came when the Indian team was in town. The former batsman's greatest innings was his famous 210 in the tied Test at then Madras in 1986, and he later spent a lot of time coaching and commentating in the sub-continent.

"He loved the sub-continent and they loved him. We are really thrilled they are here," Jane was quoted as saying by 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

A commemoration of Jones' life is being planned during the tea break on the first day on Saturday.

The newspaper also said Jane has confirmed that the cause of her husband's death "was not a heart attack, as had been initially reported, but a catastrophic stroke".

"The Victorian Coroner is now investigating, with the family keen to find out whether any head knocks he took while batting during his illustrious career, or a car crash he was involved in in Melbourne shortly before his death, had been factors," the report said.

Jones was in Mumbai in September where he was fulfilling his duties as a commentator of the Indian Premier League when he collapsed and died at the age of 59.

Back in 2014, when four of the current XI played the Boxing Day Test, Rahane and Kohli performed exceptionally well with the bat to draw the game. Rahane made 147 and 48 in the two innings.

Here's what Rahane said on the eve of IND vs AUS 2nd Test

On the eve of the second Test, Rahane talked about his role and India's record at the MCG.

"I feel proud of captaining India but the focus is on the team, not on me," said Rahane before saying that the 36 all out was just one bad moment.

"Our record at MCG is really good but what is important for us is to start well tomorrow, play to our strengths and yes, the record was very good in 2018 and also in 2014 but it is all about staying in the moment and creating a situation. Staying in the moment is important," said Rahane as he sought to banish the ghosts of the Adelaide Test.

"2018 was a slightly different wicket but when we have generally played here, in 2014 and even when other teams played, it has been a good wicket. It plays really well. Tomorrow will be different. We don't know. We have to see it and adapt to it as soon as possible," he added.

The challenge this time is huge not just because of the demoralising eight-wicket loss India suffered in the first Test after getting shot out for 36 in the first Test in Adelaide but also because of the absence of four of the star performers from the 2018 Boxing Day Test team.

While skipper Virat Kohli (82 in first innings) is back in India to attend the birth of his child, Rohit Sharma (63 not out) is under quarantine and can't play. Pace bowlers Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami (who shared six wickets, 3 each) are out due to injuries.

Australia, on the other hand, have their full bowling strength and with the return of Steve Smith, who missed the series last time due to a ban following the ball-tampering scandal, the Aussies look a far better and balanced side.

India though have opted to go in with the best balanced side possible into the Test. With the return of left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the first Test as he was unfit, India have an all-round option -- someone who can bowl as the fifth bowler and also bat at No. 7 or No. 8.

Opener Shubman Gill replaces Prithvi Shaw, who aggregated just four across two innings in the first Test. Gill is an aggressive opener and aggregated 127 in the warm-ups, including a half-century.

Right-arm pace bowler Mohammad Siraj will make his Test debut and will replace Shami whose bowling arm was fractured on the third day of the first Test and has since returned to India.
