India vs Australia 2nd Test Day 3 action begins

Mitchell Starc to resume his over

Rahane, Jadeja may have taken the game away: Tendulkar

India skipper Ajinkya Rahane made some smart decisions on the field on the first day of India's second Test against Australia and followed that up with a "fantastic knock" on Day 2, former India captain Sachin Tendulkar said on Sunday.

In a series of tweets, Tendulkar, 47, praised Rahane's captaincy and the efforts of the bowlers and debutant Shubman Gill.

He also said that Rahane's unbeaten 104-run stand for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who will start Day 3 on 40, may have taken the game away from Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

"Two good days for India in the 2nd Test. @Jaspritbumrah93, @ashwinravi99 & Mohammed Siraj bowled really well and continued to keep the pressure on to restrict Australia to a low total. Well done by the stand-in captain Ajinkya, who made some real smart bowling changes coupled...with good field placements," Tendulkar tweeted.

"@RealShubmanGill got off to a good start on debut with some good shots and looked comfortable at the crease. @ajinkyarahane88 and @imjadeja have stitched a very crucial partnership which may just take the game away from Australia.

"Last but not least, fantastic knock by @ajinkyarahane88 who not only looked solid in his defence but was also looking to play attacking shots. He kept the momentum going really well," said Tendulkar.

Gill on Rahane's century

Gill said that Rahane avoided going into the shell for the entire innings and took on the attack when he needed to.

The 32-year-old, who is standing in for regular skipper Virat Kohli who returned to India after the first Test to attend the birth of his child, however buckled down to play an innings of grit and determination against an Aussie pace bowling attack that was bowling a very tight line and length.

"This knock was all about patience and he was so patient. More importantly when you are playing such a high quality bowling attack, sometimes you go into that shell and you are not able to score runs. But the way Ajinkya bhai played, it was such a magnificent knock to watch from outside. How to see off those tough periods. The loose balls that he was getting, he was making sure that he put all of them away."

Rahane fifth Indian skipper to score a century in Australia

India's stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane became only the fifth India skipper to score a Test hundred in Australia with his unbeaten 104-run masterpiece in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.

Rahane, who walked in with India at 61/2, soon saw the departure of India's reliable No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara at the total of 64. He was left with youngsters like Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja to count on for a rescue act. He did that with aplomb adding 52, 57 and an unbeaten 104 for the next three wickets.

Nice to reflect once I'm retired: Starc on reaching 250 Test scalps

"We have got to take a bit more wickets to take in the first innings. It is a nice one to reflect probably once I am done with cricket; nice to be around long enough to take 250 wickets but we have got 15 wickets to take in this Test match and get ourselves in a position to win on Day 3. So for me, it is to come back and try and take another five," Starc said.

Mitchell Starc on drop catches

Australia could have got India skipper Ajinkya Rahane three, four or maybe five times who rode his luck to score his 12th century, said Aussie pace bowler Mitchell Starc.

"He (Rahane) batted really well. He took his chances. We probably could have got him out for three, four or maybe five times before he got to his hundred but he rode his luck there and scored a good hundred," said Starc at the end of the second day's play in the second Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.

Rahane was unbeaten on 104 at the draw of stumps. He was dropped on 73 by Steve Smith in the slips and then by Travis Head at point on what was the last ball of the day. Both the catches were off Starc's bowling, who also managed to beat the India stand-in skipper a number of times.

Milestone reached by Rahane after smashing a ton on Day 2

This is Rahane's eighth Test ton overseas and this is the first hundred as captain of Team India. With this knock, Rahane also became the second Indian batsman to score a century on his first match as captain in Australia.

Kohli was the first one to achieve the feat in 2014 when he registered a century in Adelaide.

Kohli hails top knock from Rahane

India skipper Virat Kohli on Sunday hailed Ajinkya Rahane's unbeaten 104-run knock against Australia on day two of the ongoing second Test of the four-match series here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

At stumps on day two, the visitors' score read 277/5 and the side has taken a lead of 82 runs over Australia. The hosts might have scalped wickets of India's top-order, but in the final session, Rahane and Jadeja showed grit and determination to give India firm control of the match. Rahane and Jadeja have put on an unbeaten stand of 104 runs for the sixth wicket.

"Another great day for us. Proper test cricket at its best. Absolutely top knock from Jinks," tweeted Kohli.

Kohli returned back home after the first Test against Australia. BCCI had granted the India skipper paternity leave as he and his wife Anushka Sharma are expecting the birth of their first child.

How Australia is missing David Warner?

Warner's absence is hurting Australia as they are struggling to get partnerships, something which has disappointed the coach.

"We're not going to set up games as well as we could -- if you look at our partnerships in the first Test match in the first innings and then yesterday, we have to get a lot better at that," Langer said.

"We had one 50-partnership in the first Test and we had an 86-run partnership yesterday, and you've also, when you have an 86-run partnership, you've got to turn that into 150, because you're set and to set up the game.

"So we weren't able to do that and to me, partnerships as much as anything.

Warner still having some trouble with groin: Langer

Star Australian opener David Warner is still struggling with his groin injury, coach Justin Langer said on Sunday, rendering him doubtful for the third Test against India starting January 7.

The 34-year-old had missed the last ODI, three T20Is and the first two Tests against India due to the injury that he sustained during the second one-dayer.

Warner, whose absence was felt by Australia as they folded for 195 on the opening day of the ongoing Boxing day Test, will hit the MCG nets on Sunday.

"There's no one more professional and he's doing everything possible," Langer told Ricky Ponting during an interview on Seven.

"We saw him bat the day before the game, he's batting again this afternoon at the MCG, so in terms of his batting he's flying, it's just trying to ... he's still having some trouble with his groin and we know how dynamic he is."

Langer said he is still hopeful that Warner would come good and make it to the third Test.

"His running between the wickets, his movements all the time, so he's getting closer and we're hopeful he will come good, he's certainly hopeful he'll come good, but time will tell. We've still got a few more days to the next Test match."

How Rahane-Pant stand put India in advantage

Vihari fell to off-spinner Nathan Lyon while trying to sweep him from outside off-stump after he had added 52 runs for the fourth wicket with his captain.

In came Pant and despite the constant scrutiny around him, the wicketkeeper-batsman showed no nerves and confidently went about playing his strokes.

If Rahane managed to blunt the opposition bowlers with his defensive approach before opening up, Pant's aggression forced Australia to change their attacking tactic.

Rahane's first real authoritative shot was a cracking pull off Josh Hazlewood and there was also a sumptuous off-drive for a four. Balls directed on Rahane's pads were comfortably whipped through the mid-wicket or square-leg region and he was equally good while playing the drives and cuts.

At the other end, just when Pant was beginning to pose a treat to the hosts, Starc forced an edge to bring the match back on even keel. It was Paine's 150th dismissal and wicket number 250 for Starc.

India vs Australia 2nd Test Day 2 highlights

Ajinkya Rahane played a captain's knock with a workmanlike century that steered India into a dominant position and took the sting out of Australia's potent bowling attack in the second Test here on Sunday.

Trailing 0-1 in the four-match series, India ended the second day at 277 for five for a handy 82-run lead after bowling out Australia for 195 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

At stumps, which was brought early owing to rain, Rahane was going strong on 104 and giving him company was Ravindra Jadeja on 40, the two having added what might prove to be a game-changing 104-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

This was Rahane's 12th Test hundred and his second at the iconic venue, after a fine 147 during the 2014 tour.

A day after earning rich praise for his tactical acumen while marshalling the bowlers, Rahane shone bright with the bat and was spot on with his reading of match situations during his stay in the middle.

Rahane got a life when Steve Smith dropped him on 73 at second slip in Australia's first over with the second new ball, the unlucky bowler being Mitchell Starc, who was taken off the attack after just two overs with the shining red cherry.

That particular phase was crucial from both the team's point of view and by not losing a wicket to the second new ball, India ensured they finished the day ahead of Australia, in terms of runs as well as psychologically.

Rahane got another reprieve when substitute fielder Travis Head put one down after diving forward from gully, but that was after he had got to the three-figure mark.
