IND vs AUS 3rd Test Day 1 highlights: Labuschagne, Smith keep India at bay

Smith, who had struggled in the first two Tests, came out with a positive intent this time around and scored quite a few boundaries and didn't let the Indian bowlers, particularly Ashwin, dictate terms.

Gritty half centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and debutant opener Will Pucovski on Thursday put Australia ahead on the rain-hit opening day of the third Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia ended Day One at 166/2 in 55 overs that could be bowled because of rain. At Stumps, Labuschagne and Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 67 and 31.

Earlier, after winning the toss, the hosts didn't have a great start as they lost opener David Warner early in the innings. Warner, who is coming back from groin injury after having missed the first two Tests, was caught in slips by Cheteshwar Pujara off the bowling of right-arm Mohammed Siraj in the fourth over. Warner scored five runs of the eight balls he faced.

Australia had reached 21/1 when rain came pouring in the seventh over and players left the field. Umpires called for early Lunch and the play resumed only after a lengthy break in the second session.

Indian bowlers -- Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj and Ravichandran Ashwin -- all bowled on tight lines and lengths and made sure the hosts didn't score freely after the break. However, in the last 45 minutes of the session, the visitors were a bit sloppy in the field as wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant dropped two catches of Pucovski -- one against Ashwin and other against Siraj -- and allowed the debutant to score his maiden half century as Australia reached 93/1 at Tea.

In the final session of the day, Australia lost Pucovski who became the first Test scalp of debutant Navdeep Saini. The 22-year-old got out lbw after scoring 62 runs in the 110 deliveries he faced during the course of his innings.

Smith, who had struggled in the first two Tests, came out with a positive intent this time around and scored quite a few boundaries and didn't let the Indian bowlers, particularly Ashwin, dictate terms.

Along with Labuschagne, the duo added 60 runs for third wicket and laid a solid platform for the hosts to set a huge first-innings total.

IND vs AUS SCG Test: Wearing masks mandatory for spectators

Spectators attending the third Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) starting Thursday will have to wear masks at all times except when eating and drinking, the New South Wales (NSW) government announced on Wednesday.

"From the moment effectively you get into the transport to get there, and get into the queue at the front door of the SCG, and go to your seat, and sit in the your seat, you must wear a mask," said NSW health minister Brad Hazzard said, according to cricket.com.au.

"The only exception to that, if you're eating or drinking. Obviously, Dr [Kerry] Chant and the public health team want people to enjoy a day at the cricket, but it's a Covid day and that means mask on, not mask off, unless you're eating or drinking," Hazzard said.

While wearing masks was only recommended for the first two Tests in Adelaide and Melbourne, it is now mandatory for those attending the Sydney Test.

Earlier, those who had sat in Zone Five of the Great Southern Stand of the Melbourne Cricket Ground between 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm on December 27 during the second Test were banned from attending the SCG Test, and faced an AUD 1,000 fine if they did. This came after a man who sat in that zone on that day ended up testing positive for Covid-19.

"You may think you won't get caught. I can assure you that there has been plenty of evidences already of citizens, residents, willing to speak up and tell us when someone is doing the wrong thing," Hazzard said.

Rahane on travelling with large squad in Covid times

India's stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane said on Wednesday, "It is good to have problem of plenty. Because of this Covid-19 life, in the future the team will actually travel with 20-22 players on the tour. Whoever is in the team, it is all about quality. I think it is all about backing your players and giving them confidence as captain."

Will Sydney wicket favour batsmen again?

The Sydney track has traditionally favoured the batsmen as Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Sachin Tendulkar and even Pujara and Rishabh Pant, who got centuries here during last tour, will vouch for.

If Rohit and Shubman Gill can give the team a good start, the under-pressure Pujara will be much more relieved while playing his own defensive game.

Rahane, after one of his more copybook hundreds constructed in adversity during the last game, will enter the arena with more confidence while facing the Australian quartet of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon.

When Rohit Sharma joined Indian camp follows by an controversy

Enter Rohit Sharma, whose last couple of months have been loads of off-field drama.

First it was his absence from the initial part of the tour due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing the IPL.

Then his subsequent quarantine for two weeks in a Sydney apartment.

And when he finally united with his teammates, an excited fan inside a Melbourne restaurant led to an inquiry against him and four other teammates for what was called by the local media, a potential bio-security breach.

But the white-ball legend has learnt the art of being unfazed, which was evident from his intense net session on Tuesday when he was comfortably facing the first team bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin.

His mere presence has added spring in the strides of the team and the youngsters in this current set-up swear by him, the reason he replaced Cheteshwar Pujara as vice-captain after just one Test.

When Covid travel came to Team India's rescue

While Covid-19 led to a loss of cricket and forced teams into strict quarantine conditions when they resumed playing, it also turned into a blessing in disguise for the Indian team which did not need to summon replacements for the injured players from back home.

Instead, they could call upon players who have been part of the squad for the last one-and-a-half months.

The Indian team travelled to Australia with a large 25-member contingent two weeks before the start of the tour. The squad also included net bowlers, and those who were part of the limited-overs squads but also doubled up as net bowlers for India's Test batsmen.

A couple of those, Shardul Thakur and T. Natarajan, eventually made it to the Test squad after Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav were injured during the first and second Test matches, respectively. Kartik Tyagi too has stayed back and is busy helping out the players.

Though neither Thakur and Natarajan have been included in the playing XI as first-choice Test bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini, who were part of the long-format squad from the onset, have been given first preference, the back-up they provide can come in handy.

A stay of over one-and-a-half months in Australia may have given them plenty of insight into the conditions.

Australian squad for third Test

Australia: David Warner, Matthew Wade, Will Pucovski, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Tim Paine (captain and wk), Nathan Lyon, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazzlewood, Marcus Harris, Mitchell Swepson, Michael Neser.

IND vs AUS 3rd Test preview

Having touched nadir and zenith in a span of 10 days, Ajinkya Rahane's India will look to start afresh against Australia with the big-hitting Rohit Sharma's presence adding a new dimension to what promises to be an enthralling third Test starting here on Thursday.

The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), despite being witness to some extraordinary batting performances from the touring Indian sides over the years, has not exactly been a happy hunting ground with six defeats. The lone win came a good 42 years back.

If Rahane's side can go 2-1 up and ensure the retention of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it will be one of the finest hours in the history of Indian cricket. Making it even more special is the fact that the side has been without two world class performers and a senior pacer against a nearly full-strength Australian team.

Seldom has an Australian batting unit, that boasts of a player of Steve Smith's calibre, looked so circumspect and literally intimidated by an Indian bowling unit, which isn't operating at full-strength. READ FULL ARTICLE HERE
