LIVE UPDATES

Man of the match: Axar Patel

Axar Patel said if you get back to back wickets in three innings it feels so good but he is not thinking much. He wants to continues his form with the ball and also looking to contribute with the bat. He said his strength is to bowl wicket-to-wicket and not give the batsmen any room. He analysed that the mindset of batsmen is they play out couple of maidens, then they want to release the pressure by either going for a sweep or try to hit over the infield.

Here's what Ajit Agarkar and Deep das Gupta said in a pitch report on Day 2

"The pitch is dry and it was always expected to turn. Both Axar and Jack Leach got plenty of turn, but the wickets fell to natural variations and the straighter ones. The turn will be quicker and that means less time for the batsmen to adjust, it will get only worse as the game progresses. It should be an interesting passage of play this afternoon"

Frustrated with "50-50" umpiring decisions, says Crawley

England were left frustrated with some "50-50" umpiring decisions which did not go in their favour on the opening day of the day-night third Test against India here on Wednesday, opener Zak Crawley said.

He was asked particularly about TV umpire overturning onfield umpire's 'out' call of opener Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma given not out of a stumping appeal off the bowling of Jack Leach towards end of the day's play.

"It's very frustrating. We're behind the game and we wanted those little 50-50 situations to go our way. That's the way it goes sometimes. It's certainly not our day. It does not help our chances," Crawley said at the virtual news conference after the end of the day's play.

When we batted, Jack had one where it didn't quite carry and it seemed like they looked at it from five or six different angles. When we were fielding it seemed like they looked at it from one angle. That's where the frustrations lie," he added.

I can't say whether they were out or not out, but I think the frustrations lie with not checking more thoroughly.

Asked about captain Joe Root's conversations with the umpires Nitin Menon and Anil Chaudhary after the reviews, he said, "I would like to answer but I'll leave that to the captain and senior players.

As a young player I'll keep my nose out of that situation, that's for Joe, I think.

Zak Crawley hopeful England can make a match of it, have to play hard

Despite getting bowled out for just 112 in their first innings of the third Test, England are hopeful of giving India a target of at least 150 on "a wicket where batting fourth will be extremely difficult".

"Have to aim for a lead (target for India) of at least 150. We are going to have to play extremely well but we are capable," said England opening batsman Zak Crawley after the end of the first day's play. Crawley scored the lone half-century in England's innings and was dismissed for 53.

The right-handed England opener believed that a win for England is still within reach.

"I don't think it will require a miracle actually. Batting last on this wicket will be extremely difficultÂ… I think the pitch will continue to break up," he said.

"If we bat well in the third innings and put a bit of pressure on them we can defend anything if the pitch continues to get worse."

Media outlets denied access to India-England cricket series in Ahmedabad

The Associated Press and other media outlets have been prohibited from sending independent photographers to the India-England test match in Ahmedabad.

Because of that, the AP has decided not to move any coverage of the event in any format.

Organizers allowed up to 55,000 fans into the match, about half of the recently renovated stadium's capacity. However, they denied all attempts to negotiate even allowing one or two photographers representing independent media, instead telling news agencies to rely on handouts from photographers paid by the organizers.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the News Media Coalition and news agencies have negotiated with leagues and sports organizations around the world and have been able to arrange some type of independent coverage in almost all cases.

The organizers in Ahmedabad have refused to allow any photographers, referencing advice from medical officials despite allowing thousands of fans into the stadium.

"The presence of an independent news reporting source is necessary in order to ensure the credibility and integrity of the images distributed to world viewers," said Denis Paquin, director of sports photography for the AP.

In a statement the NMC said: "This is a big miss for the event organizers. Independent photography is vital to the profile and integrity of the game of cricket. News coverage provides a massive commercial boost to sponsors which those BCCI partners have lost out on.

England asks match referee for 'consistency' in third umpire calls

England head coach Chris Silverwood and skipper Joe Root have asked the match referee to have "consistency" in the process by which the third umpire makes a decision in the ongoing pink ball Test here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday.

Both Root and Silverwood approached Javagal Srinath, the ICC match referee after the end of the opening day's play after certain decisions that went in the hosts' way were made quickly according to the visitors.

India batsman Shubman Gill was caught off Stuart Broad in the slips by Ben Stokes, but the third umpire decided that the all-rounder had grassed the catch. In another incident, a quick stumping by Ben Foakes didn't result in a wicket as Rohit Sharma had grounded his foot at the right time.

The visitors claim that both the decisions were rather made quickly without taking the help of other camera angles. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Root and Silverwood approached Srinath after stumps on day one.

"The England captain and head coach spoke with the match referee after play. The captain and head coach acknowledged the challenges the umpires faced and asked respectfully that in making any decisions there was consistency in the process. The match referee said the captain was asking the right questions of the umpires," ESPNcricinfo quoted an England team spokesperson as saying.

Here's what has happened on Day 1 of 3rd Test

India took charge of the third Test on the first day itself with local boy Axar Patel, the left-arm spinner, leading the way with the second best spell in day-night Test matches, picking six wickets for 38 to help bowl out England for just 112 in first innings here on Wednesday. India were 99 for three at the draw of stumps, 13 runs behind England.

India lost the wicket of captain Virat Kohli late in the day after he had put on 64 runs for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma, who was batting on 57 (off 82 balls) at stumps.

India had earlier lost Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara early, both falling within six balls.

Gill and Sharma had survived the new ball in twilight period.

India, who had gone into the dinner break at five runs for no loss in five overs, had added 94 in the last session, losing all three wickets that fell on the opening day.

Earlier, Patel took six wickets and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bagged three to hasten the end of England's first innings.

Opener Zak Crawley was the top-scorer for England with 53 -- the solitary half-century of the innings. The next highest score was captain Joe Root's 17.
