Virat Kohli's brilliance wasn't good enough to paper over an otherwise inept Indian batting performance as England humbled the hosts by eight wickets in the third T20 International to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, at narendra Modi Stadium, popularly known as Motera Stadium, in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Eoin Morgan unleashed his fast bowlers Mark Wood (3/31) and Chris Jordan (2/35) to restrict the hosts for 156 for six, which the visitors surpassed easily in 18.2 overs, riding on Jos Buttler's unbeaten 83 off 52 balls.

Skipper Kohli had mistakenly said at the toss that his team led 2-1 but Morgan, in his 100th T20 International appearance, made sure that opposite happened.

Buttler showed his mastery in white ball format after Kohli single-handedly carried the team to a reasonable score with an unbeaten 77 off 46 balls.

Buttler in the Powerplay pounced on Shardul Thakur and Yuzvendra Chahal in successive overs and England were never in danger of falling behind the run-rate after that.

He played the pacers and spinners with comforting ease, playing reverse slog sweeps interspersed between the lofted straight hits into the empty stands. In all, Buttler hit five fours and four sixes.

More than the Buttler's blade, the difference between two sides was the sheer pace generated by England pacers after Morgan won another good toss.

Mark Wood rocked the Indian top order during the Powerplay overs and even Kohli's magnificence wasn't good enough to save the night for the 'Men In Blue'.

Wood's thunderbolts at 90 plus miles per hour found the younger Indian batsmen in considerable discomfort.

He didn't do anything extra but bowled fast and straight, mixing the well disguised short pitched stuff to get them into a tangle.

Save Kohli, other Indian youngsters found it difficult to put bat to ball as pace and bounce off the pitch worked wonders for English speed merchants.

The Indian skipper with his near perfect technique fought fire with fire, playing pull shots and the lofted hits, shuffling towards leg stump to make room for himself.

He was lucky when his mis-timed flick off a short ball from Jofra Archer fetched him a six but then the second flick off Chris Jordan was perfectly dispatched to the longest corner for a maximum.

But the shot of the night was a straight six off Wood, which made the bowler take his time to finish the over. Not to forget the shape which he was in while executing a ramp shot off Archer.

His partnership with Hardik Pandya (17 off 15 balls) fetched 70 runs off just 5.3 overs but it was all about Kohli for the better part as the Baroda all-rounder was struggling to time the ball.

IND vs ENG 3rd T20 LIVE: Kohli & co look to maintain the over-rate today

Indian players have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees for maintaining a slow over-rate against England in the second T20 International in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Javagal Srinath of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Virat Kohli's side was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

"In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," said the ICC in a statement on Monday.

"Kohli pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing," it added.

On-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan, and third umpire Virender Sharma levelled the charge.

Here's what England cricket board said about empty stadium for remaining T20Is

The ECB added: "Aside from meaning there will be considerably less noise in the stadium it doesn't materially affect us as we remain in our bubble and even when crowds were in attendance we never came into contact with any of them, and the ball was sanitised whenever it was hit into the stands."

The first two games at the world's largest cricket stadium had attracted more than 60,000 spectators, raising questions over the safety of the fans amid the pandemic.

Crowds had returned for international cricket matches in India during the preceding Test series barring the opening game which was played behind closed doors.

The three-match ODI series in Pune between the two teams beginning on March 23 will also be played in front of empty stands as decided earlier.

IND vs ENG 3rd T20 live updates: GCA to refund money for the tickets

Nathwani said the GCA will form policy for refund of money to the spectators who have already purchased tickets for these three T20Is.

"Those who have received complimentary tickets are requested not to visit the stadium," he added.

The BCCI and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) later issued their respective statements.

"The decision was arrived at following detailed discussions with the state and local health authorities," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

IND vs ENG live updates: T20 series to be played without crowds

The remaining three T20 Internationals between India and England will be played here without spectators in the wake of rising Covid-19 cases, the BCCI said on Monday.

The BCCI's announcement came after Gujarat Cricket Association vice-president Dhanraj Nathwani said the decision was taken due a spike in Covid-19 cases.

"T20s on March 16, 18 and 20 will be played without audience at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Refund will be given to the spectators who have purchased tickets," Nathwani said in a statement.

"Due to rise in the number of Corona cases, we at GCA have decided in consultation with BCCI, the matches will be played closed door and not allow the spectators in the ground during T20 Internationals to be played between India and England at Ahmedabad."

Covid-19 cases have been on the rise in Gujarat with 890 new infections reported on Monday with Ahmedabad city contributing 205 of them. The country as a whole registered 26,291 new cases on Monday.

India vs England 3rd T20 Preview

Down 1-0, Team India made a brilliant comeback in the T20 International series against England as the team registered a comprehensive 8-wicket victory in the second match on Sunday. And with the series level 1-1, it will be all about maintaining the winning momentum when Virat Kohli and boys take the field in the third game today.

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav made their debut on Sunday and the pocket-sized Ishan put in a commendable show to lead India's chase. While he was dismissed after making a cracking 56 off 32 balls, the Indian side ticked most boxes.

For the hosts, nothing really went wrong barring KL Rahul's dismissal. After managing just 1 in the opener, he came back with a duck in the second game and the hosts might see Rohit Sharma replacing him after taking a short 2-game break.

The bowing wore a disciplined look as Bhuvneshwar Kumar's slower ones and Shardul Thakur's off-cutters ensured England scored just two boundaries in the last five overs on Sunday. But Morgan was happy that his side played on a slower wicket as he feels the upcoming games are going to be on similar lines.

"We want to learn as much as possible from tonight, I'm glad we played on this kind of wicket tonight, but disappointed with the way we played," said Morgan.

"We were prepared coming into the series. The next game is on a red-soil pitch, so probably going to turn, but we welcome these challenges," he added.

Ishan, on debut, excelled with the bat and smashed a sensational fifty. While he ensured that the hosts didn't come across the thought of not having regular openers, the England skipper certainly felt the void created by Mark Wood's injury.

"You're always going to miss Mark Wood, he feels better today so hopefully he'll be fit for the next game. If not, the fourth game," said Morgan.

While both captains have labelled the opponents as favourites for the T20 World Cup, the England skipper is happy to get the feel of playing on Indian wickets with an eye on the mega event.

On the other hand, Kohli will now look to maintain the dominant show put up in the second T20I on the back of "X-factors" the hosts have in the squad.
