Australia took the lead and gave it away in the second quarter before equalising in the early exchanges of the fourth quarter and pushing the game into penalties.

Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh gave consecutive penalties strokes away in the first two Australian attempts. While Matt Dawson succesfully converted the first, Daniel Beale hit the second wide. Vivek Sagar Prasad then put India 2-1 ahead in the shootout after which, the Australians could not find a way past Sreejesh.

The Indian custodian made two consecutive saves in between which Lalit Upadhyay scored and India won the shootout 3-1.

The first quarter of the match saw chances at both ends go begging. Australia went ahead in the 23rd minute, largely thanks to a mistake from Krishan Pathak let Trent Mitton's shot from a tight angle go into goal unchecked.

Two minutes later, Rupinder Pal Singh scored from the first penalty corner of the night that India had won. The hosts won two consecutive penalty corners in the next minute and Harmanpreet Singh scored from the latter.

The third quarter was similar to the first with both sides unable to convert their chances. Australia found success early in the fourth quarter with captain Aran Zalewski making the most of a moment of slack defending from India.

Focusing to achieve consistent performances, says Indian hockey coach

"Players are very confident. We are training well. We are looking ahead to the match. We just need to maintain our tempo which we managed in our few last games. We have been working on our goal shooting and corners. Hopefully, we can do better and can convert the opportunities we get," Reid told reporters.

"Australia plays a little differently to what the Dutch and Belgium do. We will have a little different plan against them. If you look at pro league games, there has been a turn around in the second games. I am trying to focus is to make sure that we give consistent performances," he said.

India suffer defeat against Australia in FIH Pro Hockey League

Indian men's hockey team suffered a 3-4 defeat against Australia in the ongoing FIH Pro Hockey League at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
With this win, Australia has moved to the third spot in the FIH Pro Hockey League.
Australia showed dominance in the first, second, and third quarters, and they quickly gained a 4-1 lead thanks to goals from Dylan Wotherspoon, Tom Wickham, Lachlan Sharp and Jacob Anderson.
However, India produced a spirited performance in the final quarter, with Raj Kumar Pal adding to his third quarter penalty corner with a stunning field goal to make it 4-2. Rupinder Singh's superb penalty corner drag-flick reduced Australia's lead to just one goal heading into the final eight minutes of the match.
Rupinder had a glorious chance to level the scores with a last minute penalty corner, but his effort sailed wide of the mark, giving Australia all three points.
The two teams will meet again at the Kalinga Stadium later today.
If Australia manages to defeat India, then they would move to the second spot ahead of Belgium.
