LIVE UPDATES

Man of the match: Suryakumar Yadav

Surykumar makes a big impact in today's match as he set up Indian innings after the team lost Rohit Sharma early. His first ball SIX was the highlights of the day.

Here's what Kohli said after the match

  • Proper game against a top side in this format. The wicket was better than any other game and the dew factor was massive, bigger than any other game as well. The wicket allowed us to get to that total.
  • There were a few instances in the middle which were strange, but having said that 180+ was what we were looking at. Special mention to Surya, he batted outstandingly well in his first game. Similar to Ishan.
  • They are quite fearless having played in the IPL. We don't have any T20Is after this so I want the guys to be confident and come out of it very strongly. With the ball we were quite clinical. Shardul turned it around but our powerplay start kept England in check and under pressure.
  •

Here's what Morgan said after the match

  • It's definitely been the closest game so far and India played much better and thoroughly deserve the win.
  • There was a lot more dew throughout the game and the game ebbed and flowed a lot.
  • The swing and momentum of the game went back to India and the the last over made it interesting.
  • We are just trying to learn as much as we can in this series. The progression to the World Cup in seven months is important.
  • We were very happy at the half way stage knowing that dew was around.
  • The ball didn't turn much and we were in control. In overs 16 and 17 we lost three wickets in eight balls and that set us back. It just leaves too much for the bowlers against a top quality side.

India vs England LIVE: PITCH REPORT

The pitch for today's match is the same one that was used for the first T20 International. Ajit Agarkar says during the pitch report that the pitch for 4th T20 looked more firm as comparison to other three ones. He also said that team batting first can also do wonders on this pitch as it might remain same throughtout the game.

Here's what Deepdas Gupta and Ajit Agarkar said during the pitch report:

"The England bowlers exploited the pace and bounce in that game. It's very firm again, there's a lot less grass than there was in that first game. There will be that little bit of bounce because of the speed that the English bowlers have. It certainly looks a really good pitch for batting. This is probably the best wicket we have had in the four games, but chasing will still be the way to go. This has been the flattest that we have seen so far in this series."

India vs England LIVE: Why Kohli may retain KL Rahul in India playing 11?

India captain Virat Kohli threw his weight behind struggling opener KL Rahul, calling him "a champion player" who remains the best candidate along with Rohit Sharma for the opening slot in the shortest format.

Rahul has been in woeful form with scores of 1, 0, 0 in his last three T20Is.

Kohli, who was dismissed for naught in the fourth Test and the first T20I against England before he turned it around with unbeaten scores of 73 and 77, said it is a matter of few balls.

"I was going through a lean patch two days back. He (KL Rahul) has been a champions player. He'll continue to be one of our main players along with Rohit at the top of the order," Kohli said in the post-match presentation.

IND vs ENG LIVE: How Chahal lost its toucj after Dhoni's retirement

The Haryana leg-spinner has been known as someone who can bowl with heart and fight for his wickets even after going for runs.

But lack of variety seems to be restricting his bowling.

The leg-spinner had in the past relied heavily on his wide delivery especially when MS Dhoni was the wicket-keeper.

Batsmen, while being tempted to hit him, have often fallen either stumped or mistimed their shots and holed out.

Of late, especially after Dhoni's retirement, Chahal has lost that confidence as the batsmen have been able to read that strategy of his.

India vs England LIVE: How Chahal's form dipped in recent past?

Ever since leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal put in a man-of-the-match performance as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja, picking three for 25 in the first T20 International against Australia in December, 2020, things have gone downhill for him.

He has conceded over 10 runs an over in four of the five subsequent T20 matches India have played and even in the second T20I India won against England, he leaked 8.50 runs an over, proving to be the most expensive bowler for India.

In the ongoing series, he has given away 119 runs in 12 overs, leaking runs at 9.91 an over.

Chahal was taken apart by Jos Buttler in the third T20 on Tuesday. Coming into bowl in the power-play phase, he went for 16 runs in his very first over and allowed England to wrest the initiative.

IND vs ENG LIVE: Rahul's record as an opener

In the India vs England T20I series KL Rahul's has touched an unwanted world record by an opener as he scored one run at an average of 0.33. The previous record holder was Iran's ,asood Jayezeh, who averaged 0.66 in ACC Western Region T20 in 2019-20.

However, KL Rahul has a fourth highest average on T20Is as an opener (minimum 600 runs).

Average of openers (minimum 600 runs)
  • Jos Buttler: 51.23
  • Babar Azam: 48.21
  • Mahela Jayawardene: 40.60
  • KL Rahul: 39.42

IND vs ENG LIVE: Why Tewatia should replace Chahal in India playing 11?

India will also be worried about their spin attack. Their main spinner Yuzvendra Chahal seems to have been marked out. The England batsmen, Jos Buttler in particular, didn't allow him to settle in 3rd T20 International. Thus, India needs to outthink English batsmen and must bring in Rahul Tewatia in place of Chahal.

IND vs ENG LIVE: Rahul's recent performance in T20Is

Rahul did well in the T20Is in New Zealand.

Post Covid-19, the batsman returned as the Orange Cap winner in the Indian Premier League, getting 670 runs for the 2020 season and earning the vice-captaincy slot for the limited overs series in Australia in the absence of injured Rohit Sharma.

India vs England 4th T20 preview

England's pace bowling and opener K.L. Rahul's position in the playing XI, especially at the top of the order, will be the questions India will have to answer if they are to survive in the T20 series against England.

India need to win the fourth T20I on Thursday at the Narendra Modi Stadium to stay alive in the series after England won the third match to go 2-1 up in the series.

Leading England's charge is their pace bowling attack. Mark Wood has been among the wickets and has made run-making difficult with the pace and bounce he generates from the pitch. England have won both the matches in which Wood played.

Wood gave away 20 runs in his four overs picking a wicket in the first match and then took three wickets in the next match to help his team restrict India despite Virat Kohli's unbeaten 77.

India have failed to get good starts and were it not for Ishan Kishan's blitzkrieg in the second T20 International, opener Rahul's failure would have been even more prominent.

The right-handed batsman has racked up scores of 1, 0 and 0 in the three T20Is and it looks likely that Kishan, who opened in the second T20I will go back to opening in the fourth match.

Both captain Kohli and batting coach Vikram Rathour have, however, backed Rahul to perform.
