3rd ODI highlights: Shardul's 17-run helps India beat Windies in a thriller

Virat Kohli anchored a tricky chase before Shardul Thakur played the most defining cameo of his short career to power India to a series-winning four-wicket victory over the West Indies in the third ODI at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on Sunday. India's top three — Rohit Sharma (63), K L Rahul (77) and Kohli (85) -- fired in unison in a 316-run chase but it got slippery in the end when the Indian captain left the scene with 30 required off 23 balls. It was then that Thakur, in the company of a composed Ravindra Jadeja (39 not out), smashed 17 runs off six balls with the help of a six and four off Sheldon Cottrell to seal the issue in his team's favour with eight balls to spare. This was India's 10th successive series win over the West Indies.

India vs West Indies 3rd ODI full scorecard

Displaying panache and patience in equal measure, Kohli made 85 off 81 balls, but got out to an innocuous Keemo Paul delivery with India someway off the target.
But Thakur had other ideas.

Set a challenging target of 316 in the series-decider, India were cruising at 122 for no loss when they lost Rohit was dismissed for a run-a-ball 63 in the 22nd over.
Rahul (77 off 89 balls) and Shreyas Iyer fell for the addition of 21 runs, and the task became tricky when Rishabh Pant was bowled by Paul.

At that stage, India were 201 in the 35th over but Kohli steadied the ship and took India closer to the target. However, for a change, he could not finish the job.
In the last five years this is the first time Kohli has got out in the 80s or 90s in an ODI chase.

Earlier, skipper Kieron Pollard saved his best and, along with a savage Nicholas Pooran, helped the West Indies post 315 for five.
'
The Windies left it late with Nicholas Pooran (89) and skipper Kieron Pollard (74 not out off 51 balls) taking the Indian attack into smithereens stitching together a stand of 135 run from 98 balls.

The Indian bowling attack that looked steady during the first 40 overs, knocked 118 in the last 10 overs to get past 300-run target.
The Windies skipper smashed seven sixes and three fours en route to his unbeaten knock while Pooran stepped it up, hitting three sixes and 10 fours in his knock from 64 balls.

Drafted into the side in place of injured Deepak Chahar, the lanky 27-year-old from Delhi grabbed his maiden ODI wicket when he dismissed the in-form Shimron Hetmyer (37), who looked desperate to break free after the Windies were tied down to less than four runs an over midway into their innings.

Coming into the side on the back of a five-for in the Ranji Trophy, Saini impressed with his pace and bounce as he also cleaned up Roston Chase (38) with a yorker for his second wicket in successive overs in a fine second spell of 3-0-10-2.

In fact, Saini would have taken another had Ravindra Jadeja not dropped a diving catch of Evin Lewis in the point when the left-handed opener was on 14.

Promoted ahead of Hetmyer in a surprise decision, Chase was middling the ball and looked to anchor the Windies innings but those two dismissals pegged the visitors back as they looked to recover from a sedate start.

Saini finished with 2 for 58 faltering at the death, while his senior partner Mohammed Shami took the prized-scalp of Shai Hope, eight runs short of a third successive fifty-plus score, en route to his 1/66 which included two maiden overs.

With scores of 102 not out, 78, and 42 in the ongoing series, Hope finished the year with 1345 runs but only to miss out by four runs from breaking Brian Lara's record of accumulating the most ODI runs by a Windies player in a calendar year.

In pursuit of a 10th successive ODI bilateral win against the Windies, Indian skipper Virat Kohli had everything going in favour of him right from the toss as he pressed the visitors in keeping in mind of the dew-laden conditions.

Shardul Thakur (1/66) and Kuldeep Yadav (0/67) were taken to cleaners by Pollard-Pooran duo during the back end of the innings, to provide that much-needed momentum.
In fact the left-arm chinaman missed his 100th ODI wicket after Rishabh Pant dropped Chase on duck, as the youngster's wicketkeeping once again proved to be an eyesore.

Early on, it was a complete un-Windies like show from the visitors and it took them 41 overs to reach the 200-mark, even as they had enough wickets in hand on a flat batting deck.

It was more about Indian execution and what seemed a flawed planning from their counterparts who chose to hold back an in-form Hetmyer, bolstered by his million-dollar deal from Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2020

Here are the playing 11 of both the teams:

Adding responsibility to flamboyance important, says Shreyas

Shreyas Iyer said that fans can expect the Indian team to play the same way on Sunday as they did in the second ODI against the West Indies. India won the second match by 107 runs to level the three-match series and thus set up a finale in Cuttack.

Shreyas was instrumental in that victory, smashing 53 off 32 balls, which included an over in which he scored nearly 30 runs, and also effected Shimron Hetmyer's run out with some sharp fielding.

"The previous game was a do-or-die match. If we had lost that match, we would have lost the series. So, we will play with the same mindset," Iyer said in the pre-match press conference here on Saturday. Shreyas started relatively slow in that innings, going at a run-a-ball untill Rohit Sharma was dismissed. "You have to play according to what the team demands and that is what I did the other day. The team did not demand me to play big shots and at that time we needed a big partnership and we needed the scoreboard to keep going. That is what I did," he said.

Shreyas said that while he has retained the flamboyance he had when he was starting out in his first-class career, he has now learnt to take responsibility as well.

"When I started playing first-class cricket, I was a flamboyant player and I never used to take responsibility and used to just back my instincts and go with the flow. Lately, I have realised that, once you play at the highest level, you have to take the responsibility to another stage," he said.

Shreyas said that keeping the demand of the team in mind is very important. "You have to play according to the team demands. I feel that whatever the situation demands, you have got to play accordingly. I am happy with the way I played in the 2nd ODI.

"Previous ODIs, I played I was batting at No. 5. It's not that I have been stable at No. 4, but in the last 2 games, I have been batting at No. 4. I am flexible that way in batting at any number. You got to be flexible and play according to the team's demands.

"I know that I can play in both flows. I can even play strokes and I can even nudge the ball and take single, so I know my game really well right now and I can play accordingly," he pointed.

India is best team in home conditions: Phil Simmons

Ahead of the series decider, West Indies coach Phil Simmons on Saturday said India is the best side in home conditions.

Addressing the media persons, Phil said that the Caribbean team is performing well and is giving Team India a tough fight in this series.

"India is the best team in home conditions and for us to be playing we are and giving them a run, it's great for us to see," Simmons said at a pre-match press conference.

The coach said that 320 should be the minimum score you must be looking for when you are playing against India.

"Especially playing against India, you always get to be looking at 320 to make it or chase it," he said.

Both teams have won one match each and series is currently hanging in balance.

Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmtyer scored centuries and powered Windies to victory in the first ODI at Chennai.

Rohit Sharma's knock of 159 helped India to level the series.

Kohli on verge of achieving another milestone in ODIs

India skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of achieving another milestone as he is just 56 runs away from going past South African legend Jacques Kallis to become the 7th highest run-getter in ODI cricket.

Kohli has amassed 11,524 runs from 241 matches with a stunning average of 69.70. Kallis, on the other hand, has 11579 runs in 328 matches at an average of 44.36.

The list for top run-getters in ODIs is led by former India cricketer and batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who has 18,426 runs. He is followed by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) and Australia's Ricky Ponting (13,704).

Meanwhile, Kohli also needs 116 runs more to become the 6th player to score 11,000 international runs across formats as captain. The list is currently led by Ricky Ponting, who has 15440 runs in 320 matches as captain. Kohli, on the other hand, has 10884 runs in 165 matches as captain.

Kohli could also surpass Alan Border, who has 11062 runs across formats as captain if he manages to score 178 runs in the third and final ODI of the rubber against the West Indies in Cuttack.

The only Indian cricketer to have scored more than 11000 runs as captain is M.S. Dhoni as he has 11207 runs to his name.

Chahal was seen with Pollard's bat in hand as the big-hitting West Indian looked on.

"10 kilo ka bat, 2.5 kilo ka haath !!" the caption reads (bat of 10 kilos in hands which weighs 2.5 kilos).

To this, Kohli replied: "Abey Teri thigh se badi calf hai uski (His calf is bigger than your thigh).

India vs West Indies 3rd ODI Preview

India have everything going their way as they head into the third and final ODI against the West Indies here on Sunday eyeing a 10th straight bilateral series win over the Caribbean side.

The West Indies took the home side by surprise in the opening ODI in Chennai to go one-up in the three-match series. But India, riding an all-round display, came back strongly to restore parity in the second match.

Barring a rare duck from skipper Virat Kohli, the Indian top-order fired in unison at Visakhapatnam, before hat-trick hero Kuldeep Yadav sliced through the West Indies line-up for a comprehensive 107-run victory.

Three days after his blazing 159, Rohit Sharma stood just nine runs short of eclipsing former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya's 22-year-old record of being the highest run-scorer as an opener across all the formats.

K L Rahul also struck a sublime century in a 220-run opening stand to firmly stake his claim as a long-term opener for India.

Opening the innings since the India-Pakistan World Cup clash in June, Rahul has made steady progress. In the recent assignments against the West Indies, he has been a revelation, scoring runs at will.

Then the duo of Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant chipped in with brisk knocks, and they would like to end the year on a positive note.

In bowling, Delhi pacer Navdeep Saini is in line to make his ODI debut in the absence of the inured Deepak Chahar, who was ruled out of the match with a lower back problem.

The fielding, though, has failed to match the high standards India have set in recent years.

While Iyer's effort to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer was eye-catching, Chahar dropped a sitter off Nicholas Pooran and grassed Shai Hope for a duck at the slip cordon, something that attracted Kohli's attention.

"We can't be dropping the catches and we should be better off in this department, improve on our mistakes. You should enjoy fielding." the visibly-concerned Indian captain said.

The pitch at the Barabati Stadium is going to be similar to the one in Visakhapatnam, offering plenty of runs.

The left-right combination of Hetmyer and Hope plotted India's downfall in Chennai and had it not been for a brilliant throw from Iyer to run out the former in Visakhapatnam, the Windies would have put up a strong fight in the second ODI.

Hetmyer, who struck a career-best 139 in Chennai, was over the moon and danced in excitement after being bought for Rs 7.75 crore by Delhi Capitals in the IPL auction.

His teammate Sheldon Cottrell also took home a hefty paycheck after the left-arm pacer was bought for Rs 8.5 crore by Kings XI Punjab, and the Windies duo will be bolstered by that.

Hope, who is second only to Rohit in the run chart this year, will look to make a statement after the wicketkeeper-batsman went unsold at the auction.

Kieron Pollard's team had no hesitation in chasing after winning the toss in the first two ODIs but come Sunday, the teams will be thinking twice before bowling second keeping the dew factor in mind.

The West Indies, at the same time, will be keen to end a 13-year long wait to win against India in a bilateral ODI series. While the hosts, who lost to Australia 2-3 in their last bilateral series in March, will have their reputation at stake.

They have not lost two consecutive bilateral ODI series at home in the last 15 years.

The last time an ODI was played here more than two years ago, India had pipped England by 15 runs while defending an imposing
