IPL 2020 final, MI vs DC: Mumbai wins its fifth Indian Premier League title

A peerless Rohit Sharma led defending champions Mumbai Indians to its fifth IPL title with a one-sided demolition of Delhi Capitals at Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday, closing an immensely successful tournament that had to be played in a controlled environment amid the raging Covid-19 pandemic.

Orange and purple caps holder in 2020 IPL

If last year's one-run win over Chennai Super Kings was an absolute cliffhanger, Rohit's aristocratic 68 off 50 balls made it an anti-climax with Mumbai Indians chasing the target of 157 in 18.4 overs.

Five IPL titles are certain to make Rohit the undisputed 'Numero Uno' player-cum-leader in the IPL Universe.

He has played way better knocks than this in the past and will play a few more special ones in the future.

But he might never play a more significant one considering the little whirlpool of controversy that his "once damaged and now on the mend hamstring" created.

MI's road for 2020 IPL final

The 'Hit-Man' has given an altogether new meaning to what has one known till now about crushing pain barriers.

A hamstring injury can be very painful but the manner in which India's regular white-ball skipper exploded inside the 'Ring of Fire' at the Dubai International Stadium, he was fighting a battle of his own.

The cover drive was about his class, the whiplash behind square was his swagger and the so very familiar "Rohit Sharma pull shot" was an assurance to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly that "All Is Well".

And to prove a point, he fetched those doubles, tap and run singles including a misjudged one that saw Suryakumar Yadav (19) sacrificing his wicket for his skipper and rightly so.

The carrom ball bowled by Ashwin was deposited to point fence with a cracking square cut and the straight six off leg spinner Praveen Dubey was "Boss Man" written all over it.

DC's road to 2020 IPL final

There has never been an edition where a team has looked in a different league compared to seven others.

As Rohit had said earlier, it's not rocket science but investing in pure match-winners that has given Mumbai Indians such a menacing look.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither a champion outfit that has now won five titles out of the six finals it has played.

If Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc in the Qualifier one, Trent Boult (3/30) decided that final was his turn to inflict the damage and he did it with a first ball beauty that Marcus Stoinis will remember for years to come.

Nathan Coulter-Nile looked like a weak-link but got the dangerous Rishabh Pant (56 off 38 balls) at the nick of time to put the brakes.

Rohit's batting only finished what looked inevitable but it was his captaincy that set it up.

Only 45 runs conceded in the last five overs during the DC innings was a game-changer as Shreyas Iyer (65 no off 50 balls) literally struggled during the end overs.

That was the time when save for Bumrah (0/28 in 4 overs), Boult and Coulter-Nile took the pace off the deliveries with slow bouncers and cutters making it difficult to hit.

And the decision to have off-spinner Jayant Yadav replace leg-spinner Rahul Chahar also proved to be a success.

Jayant, a former India player, did what was required. Bowled an off-break inducing an in-form Shikhar Dhawan (15) to go for a hoick against the turn and get bowled.

At 22 for 3, Delhi were going for another capitulation before Iyer and Pant steadied the ship with a 96-run stand that had some great shots in it.

But in the end, it will be a mere footnote on a day that belonged to one and only 'Captain Marvel' Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai Indians wins fair play award

Here's what Pollard said after winning the the fifth title

It's a great feeling, means a lot. Fifth trophy.. Have been here for 11 years. We have a quiet celebration. He is a different West Indian. He goes at 6am to the gym. The amount of trophies, the amount of talent that's there, you can say MI is the best T20 team going around.
Kieron Pollard

Here's what de Kock said after MI vs DC final

Missing the family is difficult for everyone. It's a great feeling. You see what it means to the franchise. There were questions around if MI can we win back to back titles. Everybody worked extra hard. The support staff and everyone, we couldn't have done it without them. It's pretty special.

What Krunal said after MI vs DC final

It's the hunger to be at the top always. We never take any game lightly and in every game there was always that 100% effort. Even back in Mumbai we prepared hard, we came one month early, everyone knew their roles and everyone was just going out there and executing what they were doing in the nets. There was never a doubt about Ishan Kishan's talent. He was ready to listen and ready to improve.
Krunal Pandya

What Bumrah said after MI vs DC final

Very happy, we have worked hard, we started preparing before others, we worked through process. We wanted to break the jinx of winning every two years. Very happy as a team. It means a great deal, the pandemic has been such a shock, we are just grateful to come back and play cricket, something we love. We are just happy we could bring back some smiles to the people back home, it's been a tough few months.

However, the Delhi spearhead win the cap after stupendous performance in the qualifier.

IPL 2020: MI-DC rivalry

Mumbai has been a most successful IPL franchise and the Delhi Capitals has only just made to its maiden final, but many fans don't know that the head to head count between MI and DC ahead of start of IPL 2020 was 12-12. Howerver Mumbai manages to win the three encounters since then and leading the head to head stats 15-12.

MI vs DC final stats analysis: Dubai hunting ground for bowlers

Dubai, which is the venue of the final, has been a happier hunting ground for the bowlers in comparison to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Bowlers' statistics in all three major aspects -- economy, strike rate and average -- have been slightly better than the overall tournament numbers.

Bowlers have conceded 8.08 runs per over in Dubai while in the entire tournament they have conceded 8.16. Bowlers also have a better strike rate of 21.61 in Dubai than in the entire tournament where they have 22.41. Bowling average in Dubai is 29.1 while it is 30.47 in the tournament.

STATS Analysis: MI top three batsmen out class DC's top three

In contention for the Orange Cap, Dhawan has over 600 runs to his name. For Mumbai, there hasn't been a single batsman to aggregate over 500 runs during this year, but their top three batsmen edge out Delhi's top trio in collective scores.

The top DC trio - Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis, have aggregated 1,409 runs whereas the top MI trio - Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav, have aggregated 1427 runs.

Here's how MI bowlers have an edge over DC

In bowling too, the four-time champions are better than DC. They have a economy rate of 7.75 whereas that of DC is 8.13. MI's strike rate of 20 is also a shade better than DC's strike rate of 21.9 while MI have also conceded less number of runs than DC while picking a wicket. MI's average is 25.83 while DC's average is 29.69.

Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals head to head

Head-to-head, MI hold a slight edge over DC. MI have won 15 of the 27 games. In this IPL, the Rohit-led side has been even better, emerging victorious in all the three games against DC.

Concerns for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020 final

The main concern for DC would be out-of-form Rishabh Pant (287 runs) and Shimron Hetmyer (180 runs). The pair carry a huge responsibility to finish the innings towards the end with their fireworks. Although both have been out of sorts so far, they would like to turn the corner in the final.

Key batsmen for Delhi Capitals

In DC's batting line-up, Shikhar Dhawan (603 runs) is in red-hot form and is known as a big match player. The left-hander could pose some serious trouble for MI bowlers. He, however, would look up for support from others, particularly captain Shreyas Iyer (454 runs).

In-form Stoinis could again open with Dhawan while Iyer needs to stabilise the innings in the middle, if need be. It, will however, be interesting to see whether the DC think-tank fills the need of a genuine power hitter.

Key bowlers for Delhi Capitals

DC comprises some dangerous fast bowlers, like Kagiso Rabada (29 wickets) and Anrich Nortje (20 wickets).

The two South Africans have been at their lethal best all through, barring a few occasions. Against a quality MI batting line-up, the onus will be on these two to deliver the goods and they would expect support from experience off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (13 wickets), pacer Marcus Stoinis (12) and left-arm spinner Axar Patel (9 wickets).

All-rounder Stoinis could be DC's trump card on Tuesday as the Aussie has shown his capability both with ball and bat, especially in the second Qualifier against Hyderabad on Sunday.

Key bowlers for Mumbai Indians

On the MI bowling front, speedsters Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult shared 49 wickets between them which shows the team's capable pace attack. The duo has been well supported by pacer James Pattinson (11 wickets) and leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (15 wickets) besides pacer Kieron Pollard.

Key batsmen for Mumbai Indians

MI batters Quinton de Kock (483 runs), Ishan Kishan (483 runs), and Suryakumar Yadav (461 runs) have laid the foundation at the top before power-hitters Hardik Pandya (278 runs) and Keiron Pollard (259 runs) capitalised from the good starts to convert into big knocks.

Rohit Sharma (264 runs) has been off colour with the willow -- his injury controversy adding to his woes -- but has once again been excellent when it comes to leading the side. He, however, has one final chance to shrug off his rustiness with the bat which would further help him attaining a ticket to Australia.

How Rabada and Nortje key for Delhi Capitals

Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg on Tuesday said that Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje's execution in the final four overs will be a deciding factor for Delhi Capitals' success in the Indian Premier League's final.

His remark comes ahead of the IPL 2020 final between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) later today at the Dubai International Stadium.

Rabada and Nortje have been the key bowlers for DC in this season's IPL. Rabada is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 26 scalps under his belt and Nortje has picked 20 wickets at a strike rate of 17.50.

Hogg feels that Delhi's success will be dependent on how Rabada and Nortje bowl in the death overs.

Rabada and Nortje in the final 4 overs of the #MI innings is the key to success for @DelhiCapitals. @mipaltan big hitters have given them the advantage and has been the difference over other teams throughout the tournament. #IPL2020Final #IPLfinal #IPL2020.
