IPL 2021, Match 31, RCB vs KKR Highlights: Kolkata wins by 9 wickets

Bowling the day's second over, right-arm medium pacer Prasidh Krishna dealt RCB a big blow when he had Virat Kohli trapped in front of wicket with his fourth delivery that jagged in and hit him above the knee-roll.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by nine wickets in Match 31 of 14th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) at Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Monday.

Chasing a paltry 93 for a win, Shubman Gill (48) and debutant Venkatesh Iyer (41 not out) stitched 82 runs for the opening wicket as KKR reached 94 for 1 in just 10 overs.

Earlier, electing to bat, RCB were bundled out for 92 with Andre Russell and Varun Chakravarthy taking three wickets apiece for 9 and 13 runs respectively.

Opening the bowling, architect-turned-mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy (3/13) did the star turn with three wickets in an excellent four-over spell. Star all-rounder Andre Russell (3/9 in three overs) also bagged three wickets, including AB de Villiers' golden duck, while there were two for Lockie Ferguson.

Bowling the day's second over, right-arm medium pacer Prasidh Krishna dealt RCB a big blow when he had Virat Kohli trapped in front of wicket with his fourth delivery that jagged in and hit him above the knee-roll.

Earlier, KS Bharat and Wanindu Hasaranga will make their debut for RCB, while Venkatesh Iyer is set to play his maiden IPL game for KKR.

Kohli was playing in a landmark 200th match for RCB, a team that he has been a part of since the beginning of the lucrative league in 2008.

"More special than the 200th game is this uniform: we promised that we would be playing for the Covid warriors, with these jerseys being auctioned for people," Kohli said at the toss. KKR needs to bring its IPL 2021 campaign back on track after losing five out of seven matches during the India leg of IPL 2021. Kolkata must win at least five of its remaining seven matches to keep its playoffs hope alive.

Meanwhile, RCB is sitting comfortably on the top-half of the IPL 2021 points table with 10 points in seven matches. Virat Kohli, who will step down as RCB captain after this season, will play his 200th match for Royal Challengers Bangalore and he's the only playing player in IPL history to represent RCB in all 14 seasons.

IPL 2021: Can RCB keep the India leg's form in second phase?

Last season, RCB qualified for the play-offs for the first time since 2016, but lost in the eliminator to Hyderabad, suffering five straight defeats at the end. In 2019 and 2017, RCB finished at the bottom of the points table apart from coming sixth in 2018.

"Virat Kohli is one of the finest cricketers, and has been a true asset to RCB. His impeccable work ethics and leadership skills has been phenomenal. We respect and support this decision and would like to thank Virat for his incredible contribution to the RCB leadership group. He has left an indelible mark on the franchise and will continue to be a senior member of the team," said Prathmesh Mishra, RCB chairman in a statement.

RCB, ranked third in the points table, will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their first match of the UAE leg of IPL 2021 in Abu Dhabi.

IPL 2021 live updates: Will KKR spring a comeback in UAE leg?

Morgan hopes the break would fare well for KKR, who were struggling to find their feet during the first phase of the tournament

"I'm delighted that we are back. Given the position we found ourselves in the beginning of the tournament and result not going our way, a little bit of a break would have hopefully helped us.

"We have certainly re-grouped here in Abu Dhabi, the guys are looking very hungry and fit, determined to make things right."

IPL 2021 live updates: Captain Morgan feels KKR is now dangerous side with nothing to lose

Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Eoin Morgan on Sunday said they will be "dangerous" opponents in the second leg of the IPL since they have nothing to lose.

The two-time champions endured an underwhelming first half, losing five of their seven matches and are languishing at the seventh spot.

The skipper feels the team now controls its own fortunes going ahead.

"We need to just look at it in one way -- we absolutely control everything from here, there is no looking behind," Morgan said during a virtual press conference ahead of their match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"We need to find a way of getting results and everyone in the team, fans know that that can make for very exciting watching because it makes us a very dangerous side with nothing to lose."

IPL 2021 live updates: Kohli to play his 200th match for Bangalore today

Kohli has been with RCB since the inception of IPL in 2008. He was appointed captain of the team in 2013, but was unable to win an IPL trophy. Under Kohli, RCB's best show came in 2016 when the team reached the final, losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs. That season, Kohli led from the front with the bat, scoring 973 runs including four centuries, the most runs by any player in an edition of the IPL.

"I also understand that RCB is coming through a transitional phase with the big auction coming next year. I have made clear to the management that I can't think of being in any other team other than RCB. I'll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last game in the IPL. It has been a great journey of nine years of joy, frustration, moments of happiness and sadness."

I have spoken to the squad this evening before the second leg of the tournament starts to inform everyone that this will be my last leg in the IPL as captain of RCB," said Kohli.

"Spoke to the management this evening, was on my mind for a while as I had recently announced stepping down from T20I captaincy to manage my workload with which has been immense over the last many years. I want to be committed to the responsibilities that I am fulfilling. I felt I needed this space to refresh, regroup and be absolutely clear in how I want to move forward," added Kohli.
