Olympics 2021 Highlights: Women's hockey team scripts history, enters semis

Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur rose to the occasion when it mattered and converted India's lone penalty corner in the 22nd minute to surprise the Australians.
On Day 10 of Tokyo Olympics 2021, the Indian women's hockey team scripted history today by qualifying for the Olympic Games semifinals for the first time, beating three-time champions Australia by a solitary goal. A day after the Indian men's team entered the Olympic semifinals following a 49-year gap, the world no. 9 women's side also entered the history books with a phenomenally gritty performance.

India's best performance in the Olympics came way back in the 1980 Moscow Games where they finished fourth out of six teams.

In that edition of the Games, women's hockey made its debut in the Olympics and the sport was played in a round-robin format with top two teams qualifying for the final.

The Rani Rampal-led side will play Argentina in the semifinal on Wednesday.

India would be hoping a good performance from discus-thrower Kamalpreet Kaur, who was one of the two athletes to meet the automatic qualification mark [64.00m] and moved into the final ranked second in qualification.

India shooters their Olympics campaign without any medal

India's ace shooters Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Sanjeev Rajput failed to qualify for the medal event after finishing 21st and 32nd respectively in the men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions, at the Asaka Shooting Range today.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar amassed 1167 (63x) points at an average of 9.725 after shooting 120 shots on the target in three positions while compatriot Sanjeev Rajput gathered 1157 (55x) in the qualifications which in the end was just not good enough to make it to the top-8 players' final. Russian Olympic Committee's (ROC) Sergey Kamenskiy topped the qualification with 1183 (78x) points. China's Changhong Zhang also scored 1183 points but with 67x that landed him on the second.

In the first position of the qualification event -- Kneeling -- Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar got off to a flying start after he aimed 99 and 100 in the first two series. He proceeded with a good 98 and again a perfect 100. Meanwhile, veteran Sanjeev Rajput aimed 96 and a 99 in the first two series and followed it with a decent 95 and 97.

During the prone position series, Aishwary again enjoyed a good start with a 98 and a 99 in the first two series. The 20-year-old surprisingly didn't land any perfect score in prone as he finished the position with two consecutive 97s which instantly landed him out of the top-15. Sanjeev improved massively in prone as he aimed 97, a perfect 100, and two consecutive 98s as he continued to stay outside of the top-20.

Pratap was unable to carry the momentum into the standing position round where he opened with a below-average score of 95. He improved it by a 96 but then dropped a very poor 93 in third. Aishwary finished with a decent 95 but till then it was just too late for the Indian shooter to gain any ground.

For 40-year-old Sanjeev, he failed to replicate the success of the previous round in standing position as he scored 94, 93, 95, and 95 and dropped outside of top-30 in the 39 players' field.

Dutee Chand clocks 23.85 sec, finishes 38th out of 41 athletes in 200m

India's top woman sprinter Dutee Chand failed to advance in 200 metres, finishing last in her heat at the Tokyo Olympics, clocking 23.85 seconds to ends seventh. Her personal best in 200m is 23.00 seconds, set at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

The 25-year-old Dutee was 38th out of 41 in the overall standings despite a season's best time of 23.85.

Namibia's Christine Mboma won the heats with a timing of 22.11 seconds, a new national record, while Gabrielle Thomas of the USA -- the world-leading time holder for the season -- was second in 22.20 seconds.

Niger's Aminatou Seyni came in third with a timing of 22.72 seconds to seal the three automatic qualifying slots for the semi-finals.

The top three finishers from each heat along with the three fastest timings across the seven races make the semifinals, which will be held later on Monday. The final is scheduled for Tuesday.

Earlier, the Indian sprinter had bowed out of the 100m competition on the opening day of track & field competitions, clocking 11.54 seconds to finish seventh in her heat that also featured two-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica.

The world champion, however, was later pipped by her compatriot Elaine Thompson-Herah in the final for the gold medal. Shericka Jackson took the bronze medal in the women's 100m to complete the all-Jamaican podium.

Social media came alive following Dutee's 200m sprint, with few complimenting the runner for achieving her season's best time, while others were critical of her performance.

Sonam to begin India's wrestling campaign against Asian silver medallist Khurelkhuu

Young Indian wrestler Sonam Malik was on Monday placed in the challenging bottom half of the women's 62kg draw, where she will open her Olympics campaign against Asian silver medallist Bolortuya Khurelkhuu from Mongolia.

The 19-year-old will be the sole Indian wrestler in action on Tuesday.

Relatively new to the big stage, every single bout will be a test of character for Sonam, who qualified for the Tokyo Games by making the final at the Asian Qualifier in April in Almaty.

Khurelkhuu is more experienced than Sonam and has stood on the podium on both the occasions she took the mat this season but the Indian is not intimidated.

Sonam came into Olympics after recovering from a right knee injury that did not let her fly to Russia for training in build-up to the Games.

I was blank for few seconds, didn't know what to do: Sindhu on Olympic medal

Reigning world champion P V Sindhu on Monday said she was completely blank after winning a second successive Olympic medal and it took her a while to realise the enormity of her historic achievement in the ongoing Games.

The 26-year-old Indian on Sunday etched her name among the all-time greats after winning badminton's women's singles bronze medal to add to the silver she won at Rio de Janeiro five years back. She became the first Indian woman and second overall from the country to achieve the feat.

"...I was blank, my coach was in tears, it was a big moment, I hugged him and thanked him. I didn't know what to do for 5-6 seconds, I shouted so all emotions came together at that moment," she said during a virtual press conference.

In the third-place play-off, Sindhu beat China's He Bing Jiao. The win came after a painful loss in the semifinals to world no 1 Tai Tzu Ying.

Sindhu said coach Park Tae-sang's encouragement helped her to recover from the semifinal loss and claim the bronze for the country.

"After semis, I was really sad, I was in tears but my coach said it is not over yet. There were mixed emotions, if I should be sad or happy but he told one thing. He said 'there is a lot of difference between a fourth position and a bronze' and that really hit me," she said.

"I went with the mindset that I have to give my 100 percent."

Really happy that player under my guidance has won medal at Olympics, says Sindhu's coach Park Tae-sang

PV Sindhu's coach Park Tae-sang is elated with the Indian shuttler winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the women's singles event. Sindhu on Sunday became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals as she defeated China's He Bing Jiao in the bronze medal match.

"I am really happy because this is the first time in my coaching career, that my player has won a medal. I am really happy. Actually, Sindhu is already India's big Olympic star. It created pressure on me when I started working with her. I was trying to make Sindhu an Olympic gold medallist, but bronze medal is also very big. I am really happy. I told Sindhu that we have to play one more match after she lost the semi-finals. I believe in her and she did it. I thank Sindhu very very much," he said during a virtual press conference organised by Badminton Association of India (BAI).

When asked what inputs he gives to Sindhu during the matches, the coach said: "I always talk to Sindhu and I tell her to play the match 'aaram se'. I tell her to calm down and that she needs to get the job done. "

Men's hockey team eyes end to Olympic medal drought

Handling the immense burden of expectations would perhaps be the key when the Indian men's hockey team takes on world champion Belgium, aiming to secure a place in the Olympic finals and with it, a medal for the first time in 41 years here on Tuesday.

With 11 Olympic medals, eight of them gold, in its kitty, India has a rich history in the Games and the Manpreet Singh-led side seems on course to resurrect that glorious past.

The Indians achieved the semifinal slot by beating Great Britain 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Sunday, and are now in touching distance of a medal.

India's last of the eight Olympic gold medals came way back in 1980 Moscow Games but there were no semifinals in that edition as only six teams participated in the event.

The last time India featured in the semifinals of the Olympics was in 1972 Munich Games where they lost 0-2 to arch-rivals Pakistan.

The Indians are on a four-match winning streak after the 1-7 drubbing against Australia in their second pool match and come Tuesday, Manpreet and his teammates would look to continue the momentum.

But it would be easier said than done as in Belgium, India face a tough opponent, which has improved leaps and bounds in the last few years. Besides being current world champions and world no.1 side, Belgium are also the reigning European champions.

The recent head-to-head record also favours India.

India and the Red Lions played each other three times in 2019 during their tour of the European nation and the Asian side came out victorious in all the matches.

India defeated Belgium 2-0, 3-1 and 5-1 in the three games during that tour.

In the most recent outing in March this year, India beat Belgium 3-2 during their Europe tour.

In fact, in their last five matches against Belgium, the Indians have registered four wins.

However, the last time both the sides met each other in the Olympics, Belgium came out 3-1 winners in Rio.

American star Simone Biles to return for balance beam finals

Simone Biles is returning to competition in Tokyo. The 2016 Olympic champion will compete in the balance beam finals on Tuesday, a little over a week after stepping away from the meet to focus on her mental health.

"We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can't wait to watch you both!" USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

The 24-year-old Biles won bronze on beam in Rio de Janeiro five years ago and qualified for the eight-woman final at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre on the first weekend of the Games.

She removed herself from the team final on July 27 after a shaky performance on vault during the first rotation.

Tokyo Olympics: Had pressure in last minutes against Aus, but kept calm, says goal-scorer Gurjit

India women's hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia stated that the team was hoping to get a match against Australia in the quarter-finals as the Women in Blue have played against them several times over the years.

The Indian women's hockey team scripted history on Monday here at Oi Hockey Stadium -- North Pitch -- as they qualified for the semi-finals of the Olympics for the very first time after defeating Australia 1-0.

"We were thinking that in quarter-final (if) we get Australia as we have played many matches with them and we know that we can play our game in front of them. They give us space and our team was able to take advantage of those things today and as a team, we played sixty minutes on the field," Savita Punia told reporters after the match.

Tokyo Olympics: Need courage and mindset to come back after losing opening matches, says Rani Rampal

India women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal was proud of the Women in Blue as the team executed their plans well against Australia and booked a historic berth in the final four of the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Gurjit Kaur scored the lone goal in the match during the first half through a penalty corner in a very tightly contested match.

"I am super proud of the team especially each individual player. Before the game, we just said one thing to each other, give it all that you have then we will see what will happen, just don't focus on the semi-final or final. We just concentrated on sixty minutes and we put all our energy and focus on our jobs," Rani Rampal told reporters after the match.

"By scoring the goal in the first half and then defending it especially against a team like Australia is not easy. We played as a team and according to the plan of our coaches."

A movie on self belief and staying in the moment did the trick: women's hockey coach

Watching a movie on self belief after three consecutive losses rebuilt the Indian women's hockey team's shattered morale and helped it to "aim for the clouds", the side's Dutch coach Sjoerd Marijne revealed on Monday after Rani Rampal and Co. entered their maiden Olympic semifinals here.

The Indian team bounced back tremendously in the tournament after successive losses and Marijne said the movie helped psychologically ahead of the must-win pool game against Ireland but did not reveal its name.

"The difference is believing in ourselves and believing in their dreams and then it's about going back to reality focussing on your past. I think that is the main thing and that's what we did," Marijne said after upsetting world no.2 Australia in the quarterfinals here.

"If you lose you don't stop believing and that's what I told the girls. The most important thing is to stay in the moment. I showed them a movie and that movie is about being in the moment and I think that was really helpful. Against Ireland we kept on referring to that movie," he said.

NEWS UPDATE: Sonam to begin India's wrestling campaign against Asian silver medallist Khurelkhuu

"I am fine. There is no pain in my knee. It's neither tough nor easy draw for me," Sonam, who earned a name for herself by defeating Rio bronze-medallist Sakshi Malik four times, told PTI after the draw ceremony.

If Sonam manges to cross the first hurdle, she will most likely find 2018 world champion Taybe Mustafa Yusein from Bulgaria in the quarterfinals.

"It does not matter what the draw is. Sonam is not taking any pressure. She was even ready to take on Japan (Yukako Kawai). So, she will do well," said her personal coach Ajmer Malik.

Kawai is 2019 World Championship bronze winner and if at all she clashes with Sonam, it will be a bottom-half semifinal.

The draw is such that the repechage route may open up for Sonam if she does not go deep on her own.

This win proves that our women's team is among the best, says Dilip Tirkey

Former captain of Indian men's hockey team Dilip Tirkey congratulated the women's hockey team for reaching the semi-finals of the Olympics for the very first time.

The Indian women's hockey team scripted the unthinkable on Monday at Oi Hockey Stadium -- North Pitch -- as they qualified for the semi-finals of the Olympics after defeating Australia 1-0.

"I would like to congratulate the women's hockey team. Our team has created history in Tokyo. This is for the third time we are participating in the Olympics and in any tournament including World Cup we weren't able to reach the semis," Dilip told ANI.

"I, personally was very surprised because this type of performance was unseen until now. Australian woman's team has won medals in Olympics many times and the way which Indian team started the match was marvelous. Indian goalkeeper made some great saves and played attacking hockey. It was a complete and fit team. And proved that our women's team is among the best."

"Team took on the field getting inspired by men's team. If the team continues with this performance then there is no stopping them from reaching the final of the Olympics. With both men's and women's teams in semis, these Games are proving to be lucky for us," pointed Dilip.

We were always confident that we will reach the semi-finals, just two more steps remain but reaching the semi-finals is a very big accomplishment," former Sports Minister Rijiju told reporters.

"After 49 years, the men's team has reached the last four, in 1980 there was round robin stage. It is a very big thing and as a nation, we should celebrate," he added.
