In match 31 of Indian Premier League 2020 (IPL 2020), KL Rahul played a captain's knock and Chris Gayle fired in his first game since January as Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) finally ended its five-match losing streak with an eight-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore at Sharjah cricket ground on Thursday.
Chasing 172 in a must-win game, the in-form opening pair of Rahul (61 not off 49) and Mayank Agarwal (45 off 25) got off to a flying start before Gayle (53 off 45) joined his skipper in the middle to get KXIP close to the finishing line.
Needing seven off the final two overs with nine wickets in hand, KXIP somehow managed to take the game to the last ball with Nicholas Pooran finally hitting the winning six.
Both Rahul and Gayle smashed five sixes each, rendering the opposition attack helpless.
Batting first, skipper Virat Kohli top-scored with 48 off 39 balls in his 200th game for RCB before Chris Morris' 25 off 8 in the death overs took the team to 171 for six.
It was a rare all-round effort from KXIP who had failed to close out games earlier in the competition.
Mohammad Shami (2/45) conceded 24 runs in the final over that spoiled his figures after he got rid of Kohli and AB de Villiers but overall it was a much improved bowling effort by KXIP especially in the death overs.
Leg spinner M Ashwin struck twice and pacer Chris Jordan took his first wicket of the tournament.
The run chase was supposed to be straightforward after Agarwal took the opposition to the cleaners in the powerplay before Rahul took over. As usual, the 41-year-old Gayle, batting at three, took his time early on before going ballistic.
Earlier, KXIP conceded only 25 runs from over 16-19 before Morris and Isuru Udana hammered Shami for three sixes.
Rahul experimented by opening the bowling with Glenn Maxwell (0/28 in 4 overs). He was slog swept by his Australian teammate and close friend Aaron Finch on the final ball.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: 100 runs in 13.2 overs (80 balls), Extras 8
Royal Challengers Bangalore: 150 runs in 19.1 overs (115 balls), Extras 12

PITCH REPORT and TOSS PREDICTION
"I think it's a good wicket. There's a shimmer, a bit of brightness on this wicket so I think it is going to be quicker than we saw the other night. It'll be more of an even contest between bat and ball. Although the wickets have slowed up, this one should be better. Win the toss and bat," reckpns Pieterson during pitch report
Key bowler for RCB
Chris Morris has been a trump card for RCB in two matches so far as he took five wickets.

RCB still looks to improve its game: Simon Katich
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach Simon Katich has said that all the players within his side are not content with where they are at currently and everyone wants to improve their game.
Katich's remark came ahead of RCB's match against Kings XI Punjab later today. The Virat Kohli-led side is currently at the third place in the IPL 2020 points table with ten points from seven matches.
"Every game is important, it is going to be a tight competition like it always is. Anyone can beat anyone on a given day, we want to make the most of this momentum we have built and the hard work we have done at this stage. I don't think our playing group is content with where we are at the moment, we haven't qualified for anything, we haven't won anything, it is a case of building and keeping the confidence going," said Katich in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of RCB.

WATCH: How KXIP gearing up for second half of IPL 2020
Kings XI Punjab has failed to pull up his socks in the crunch situations and that's why Punjab is languished at the bottom of points table. Here's how KXIP is gearing up for today's match and how players are taking up the challenge to win every single match from today onwards.
RCB's bowlers have also stepped up whenever the team needed. The arrival of Chris Morris has further boosted the pace attack and the South African all-rounder can also prove to be handy with the bat if needed.
Isuru Udana too has also been decent with the ball while Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar have executed their plans perfectly, creating trouble for the opposition batters.

Here's what Sundar said about his best bowing performance in IPL 2020
In the match against Mumbai Indians, RCB secured a win in the super over. Washington conceded 12 runs in his quota of four overs and he also picked up the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma.
"It's very hearting to bowl really well in that particular game, both the teams scored 200 and I was able to bowl really well and give 12 runs in four overs," said Washington in a virtual press conference.
"It's not that I did anything different or something. I just bowled in the right areas again and again and created different angles for different batsmen," he added.

Key bowler for RCB
UAE pitches are generally on the slower side but Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) bowler Washington Sundar has not come across a lot of assistance for the spinners in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Washington has been a key cog in the bowling wheel of RCB in the 13th edition of IPL. The right-arm spinner has taken five wickets with an economy of 4.90.
Also, in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday, Washington picked the crucial wicket of Eoin Morgan and gave away just 20 runs in his four overs.
"I think the other day we played in Sharjah there was a little bit of dryness in the wicket but apart from that I don't think I saw a lot of assistance for spinners," said Washington in a virtual press conference.
"I felt if we hit the right areas and hit the right lengths over and again it's not going to be so easy for the batsman to just keep hitting boundaries. So yes it's all about hitting the right lengths," he added.

Key batsmen for RCB
The RCB top-order comprising Aaron Finch, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are in good touch and can destroy even the best bowling attack.

RCB vs KKR: Gayle for Maxwell?
Looking at the perfect batting conditions here, Gayle could create an absolute carnage but remains to be seen how quickly the self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' gets into the act.
The KXIP think-tank might axe an out-of-form Glenn Maxwell in order to accommodate Gayle.

IPL 2020, Match 31: RCB vs KKR preview
Bottom-placed Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) will be under tremendous pressure as it now faces a must-win situation when KL Rahul led side take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. After losing six of its seven games, the KL Rahul-led KXIP is languishing at the bottom of the points table with two points. Despite having the top-two leading run-getters of the season in skipper Rahul (387 runs) and Mayank Agarwal (337), KXIP has failed emerge victorious in six IPL 2020 matches.
Barring the duo, the other KXIP batters have failed to click and lack of an all-round effort has been clearly visible. Same is the condition of the bowling attack as except Mohammad Shami and Ravi Bishnoi, the others have been off-colour.
However, KXIP can draw some confidence from the fact their solitary win in ongoing season had come against RCB. Moreover, Chris Gayle, who has warmed the bench in the previous games, is likely to get a game on Thursday.
